I hate it when we lose good prospects at the last minute like we did this year to aTm. However, I hope OU is smart enough not to go this route. This is like telling a girl that if you're going steady with her she can't dance with anyone else at the prom. Kinda insecure in my opinion. Besides, why be a hypocrite? OU for damn sure will be trying to steal someone up until the last minute so why cop a prima donna attitude that your own school is too weak to handle the same competition? I like Mack but he's pressing now.

No, this is like when you ask a girl to the dance and she says sure and then she decides to go with someone else the day before and the only people you can ask are the ones that didnt already have dates. You wouldn't want her to commit to going to the dance with you if she might change her mind, and you wouldn't want a recruit to commit to you when they know they might change their mind

I see the point you are making and it's a good one. But the bottom line is "all is fair in love and war". Recruiting is war. These kids could care less about a coach's job security or how it affects anyone other than themselves and their immediate posse. Nothing will change that since society teaches everyone to "get mine" and "who cares about you?". How's this for a solution: if someone breaks a verbal within 5 days of NSD they can do so with impunity. However, the school that does sign them loses 1/3 of a scholarship. The loss rolls over from season to season so at some point a school knows it will take a hit (not big but at least something) if they have been the beneficiary of poaching recruits. Anyone signed when their commitment has been in hand for at least 6 days would not apply toward the penalty. This isn't perfect but at least something along these lines would make a coach/school stop for an extra minute and consider if turning someone is worth it if they have been doing a lot of that lately.

I don't get it. Are you also saying the last sentence to UT? or do you just not know how to use quotation marks?

The last part I'm kinda saying in my head as I walk away mooning the campus.

Agreed, unfortunately. I've watched many a game, and tried to figure out just exactly WHAT the strategy was......because often times, even when they're winning, nothing they do makes any sense. Like Diaz's "no gap integrity" defense......

I don't get why Brown can't find quality assistants. Seems like after the '05 season, Texas has had a difficult time finding (and keeping) good coaches with the exception of Muschamp, who's now at Florida.

Mack kept his buddies at coach for too long, and all those dudes were ready for retirement. They had no fire, no reason to still coach hard. Losing Muschamp hurt, but we've typically been able to replace a coordinator or two. Hell I'm so desperate I'd take Chizik back at DC. We'll see what Applewhite does at OC this year. If Searls can get the OL in shape to be able to run block, we *should* win the Big 12. Any other coach in this conference bringing back the talent we have would win easily. So this season is going to be an indictment either way of this staff. They'll be favored to win the conference. They blow it, I think EVERYBODY has to go, all the way up to the AD.

With the talent they have, 10 win seasons should be expected every year (unless several teams in the conference get hot) in Austin. Wonder who would be targeted if Mack gets forced to retire?

They won't force Mack to resign. The AD will be gone, and then we have to hope they hire the right AD. THAT guy will bring in his own coaches.

One big ass paragraph...horribly written. :lame:

I'll say it again......this really isn't a "change" in that Mack only really recruits kids that mostly want to be here regardless. He rarely has to compete for a commit.

Perhaps he rarely "had" to compete. Times could be changing.

Possibly. But they still pursue kids that always wanted to be Longhorns. There will ALWAYS be a number of those kids available in this state. The question is whether the top tier talent will be in that same pool. Lets face it......regardless of the team's record, this is still an easy sell to a recruit. Top notch facilities, a proven track record of putting kids in the pros, and a great school to sell to parents. All in a decent city to live in. You have to almost not recruit at all to not get any talent here.

Geeez, what do you have to do to only win 1 NC in 40 years?

Texas will always be a top destination (short of a major scandal), especially for kids in state. however, with transportation being easier and more games being on TV I see the fear of never getting to see their son play ball diminishing. I'm not trying to say that one season for A&M is going to undo a century of Texas history and recruiting power, but in the future being able to use the "don't you want to be able to watch your son play every weekend" selling point will keep losing power. More and more kids will start to see other teams every weekend and will be less inclined to be die hard, Texas or bust, kids. There will still be some, just as all schools have them. I think tying their hands with a "take it now or leave forever" attitude is a tough sell.
