Kela never was a starter. Clase never started above Rookie-level ball. Fairbanks failed as a starter at the A level.
Not sure I write correctly or you misunderstood
Point is some prospects are born to relieve as opposed to having to fail first.
Ones who have a limited pitch mix come to mind

Your biggest point to me which I still disagree with is the Eovaldi signing

don’t think you stop progress to wait on the closer market which just opened up and LAD swooped in with deferred money

News alert the off-season is not over so maybe the disgust is premature

That's true, but a lot of those guys are relievers almost all the way up through the system. Like Church, and Hales. Bryan Magdaleno is also in that category.

Our problem has been that the organization doesn't appreciate those who are born to relieve. They are included in trades a lot. If we do trade for a closer I would expect one of Church or Hales to be included in the trade. That is why we traded away Clase and Fairbanks.

I have no problem with signing him if it is accompanied by trading Mahle or Gray. I just said we needed a closer more.

When guys or positions are important to CY he goes right after them like Seager and Semien and some of the pitchers we have acquired the past 3 years. The closer is not important enough to him or he would go after one with the same sense of urgency. I just think that is a flawed way of building a roster.

We should have sought out Tanner Scott as soon as free agency opened. If that didn't work out move on to the next best guy and so on. Leaving closer for last with only a few million dollars left to spend was unwise, in my estimation.

Maybe we needed a former closer to be the Assistant GM to provide some balance. Lol

That was a very valid point back in late December. I believe we had a discussion about that on here back then.

When we do trade for a closer, let's go after one who isn't a rental. Let's not have to go through looking for another one for 3 or 4 years.

If the Rangers signed Robertson to close and they traded Taveras to afford him, would that be okay with you guys if that means Dustin Harris would the the 26th player on the roster?

I doubt if they do anything else. Except maybe to bring in another veteran catcher. How many catchers do they need?
They just signed a catcher with a worse-than-Hedges batting average. Lol

Counter point on closer on my end
It any be tough to sign but not impossible. DRob is a LAD killer. Guess Helsley and Clase may be in trade market or just let Gray close for now
Or last resort get Teodo at some point. Maybe Leiter but as a last resort
Maybe someone emerges out of nowhere that sometimes does happen

they may have to limit Rocker innings too so who knows

Of course we would rather not use our youth but at some point not now we could become desperate

Yeah, that is where they are at. It could have been avoided with a slightly different set of priorities, though. Maybe we can trade for a great young closer who can come here and fill that slot for several years.

I felt that signing Pederson was not a good move. You can’t trust him in the field and he’s terrible against left handed pitching. Josh Smith had a breakout season last season. He showed he can hit pitching from both righties and lefties. You could used the money spent on Pederson for relief pitchers.

Yep. That is how I felt when they signed him.

Smith hit 258. I like him but he's still a work in progress.

Can Pederson pitch. The Rangers needed pitching more than they needed him. They still do.
Yeah, it is about priorities. If they still had $20 million more to spend than they did, then go ahead and get a hitter, but spend big on a closer, too.

If the Rangers had really wanted to spend big thus offseason, they could have traded away Marcus Semien and his .237 average. I am afraid, a year from now he will be virtually untradeable.
