Well, that would have depended on if we got a top pitcher and Perez or not. I wouldn't have doubted us having a chance at a playoff with the rotation I listed above as long as the free agent was a good one. I did make that list after hearing that CY had contending as a goal. You have to remember, I thought Otto was going to be a good pitcher next year and that Dunning would be just behind him. You see, I was very optimistic.
This is the staff ERA I expected before we acquired Heaney or Eovaldi. I think these numbers would have been able to contend. Of course, I expected them to improve the pen as well.

"Right now, this is what I would expect our rotation members' ERAs to be this year."

That should eliminate a few 1 run loses.

Totally crazy notion in back of head especially if his innings average only 5. Have Heaney close
He is a strike out guy with experience. Just not sure if he could pitch daily

Obviously don’t think this could happen unless we get in playoffs

Honestly I don’t mind competition for LF. It can bring out the best in players And let the best man win. I hat to give it away to guys who clearly are not exceedingly superior to what we have.
It shows a vote of no confidence.

Duran did not go to winter ball and play out of position to have zero shot at LF. If they trade for Reynolds so be it. Otherwise stand pat.
You never know we may have 3 new outfielders in a year anyways

I’m ok with starting out with Bubba (.389 BABIP small sample) in LF but as an alternative sign AJ Pollock who’s capable of 20hr 75 rbi and a .275 avg.

Competition is great, but no more three headed monsters in LF like a few years ago.

Or CF, or RF. He played all three in winter ball.

Adolis may be our best answer for CF until Carter is ready.

If the season started next week, I would go with

LF Smith
RF Garcia
CF Bubba

Duran would continue to play a lot in the OF for Round Rock. Let him get another 150 or more AB there and then see if he needs to replace someone in the Rangers OF.

I still think I would go with Leody over Smith. He did hit .261 and has shown more power.

Look how many at bats in the big leagues it took Leody to do that though. In Leody's first 293 AB he put up this line.

.188/.249/.321

In deciding to go with Smith over Leody, I also took into account what each did in the minors. Also, I think Carter is destined for CF and we have seen what we have in Leody through 600 big league at bats and 2300 minor league at bats. We don't have much time to see what Smith can do if we don't find out this year.

He still hit .261 for the season. That meant he did heat up. Smith hit .197 and looked over matched by the end of the season. And Leody is better defensively.

So you don't put any stock at all into how many big league at bats a player has when it comes to how they perform?

By your reasoning shouldn't we have released Leody after those first 300 AB? Or, would that have been a mistake to judge him then?

To me, that sounds like a great way to miss out on some good players who come up. I think that kind of thinking once led us to trade Wilson Alvarez and Sammy Sosa. Dave Stewart too.

It seems like you want to judge a player only by his first 293 bats regardless on how he performs after that. You don’t seem to get that it takes some players longer than it does others. I’ll take player that hits 80 points higher than another player any day.
