I don't think the Rangers can afford to wait and have what could be a self-imposed very short time period to sign someone. I think they should go after a SS beginning next week, and then wait to see if the new CBA affords them the luxury of no longer having to give up a draft pick for a second free agent.

Feels like this will either be a fast-moving market or one that moves like molasses. No in between.

Yeah it’s definitely hard to tell.
Hopefully they come to terms on a new CBA quick. Before the dec deadline.

It’s tough.
Kris Bryant and the “manipulation” on his service time has an argument, but then Kelenic and his argument some what proved invalid with the horrendous season he had this year, being overmatched by MLB pitching.
Then you have tons of players signing big long contracts that go on to play horrible compared to their pay. They aren’t doing the players after them any favors by being awesome the last 2 years of arbitration, signing a huge contract and then crashing to or below leave average right after.
As a GM/Owner it’s hard to articulate wether it’s worth it or not.
Then you see the Rays and Athletics being amazing with very little payroll year after year.

What do y’all propose they do?

Free agent at 28 regardless of service time?
Using the revenue sharing to pay players at the end of the year based on their performance?

I see Avisail Garcia just opted out of his $12 million option.
He’s a guy I could totally see getting a 3/$45 and going on to put up his normal numbers. Not his walk year numbers.
I bet he hits .240/.310/.445 .755 OPS with 20 or so HRs and maybe an injury next year. Very avg numbers that would be expected of any avg player who gets full playing time to accumulate.
He’s not going to do the players after him any favors.

I think we have to be looking for guys with an 800 OPS and above. This year or next

Yeah most definitely. And not a guy that only does it on his contract year. Find hard nose competitive guys that consistently try hard year in and year out.

That’s why I like Trevor Story. Seems like a good dude. Hasn’t had an OPS below .800 except for one year. And it was a .765 his sophomore year.

I think they just need to tweak what they have now. Make it harder to game the system.

I don't care for revenue sharing.

I don't want a lower luxury tax threshold.

I know it’s not too terribly important and sometimes not that accurate, but I’m ready for the “top 50 free agent predictions” by mlbtraderumors

Does that usually come out the first day of free agency?

Can’t argue with that
with Hearn, Dunning, Alexy, Otto, Latz, Allard, Winn, Bradford there doesn't seem any reason to rush Leiter, Vanasco, White & Roby. let them develop

Last year's came out 7 days after the last WS game. So, 5 more days probably.

This is a really good article.

Nice read.
I’m all for the universal DH.
I’m ok with arbitration starting the 2nd year
One thing they can do for the service time manipulation is just round up. If a player plays/is on active 25 man roster in 90 games or more that should count as a full year.

Maybe make it to where players can become free agents after 6 years but also at the age of 29.5.
That way players can still hit the market at 27&28 and also so the avg player can hit the market going into his age 30 season to increase earnings so you don’t end up with players hitting the majors for half a year at 25 then half a year at 26 and hitting free agency going into their age 32 season, severely cutting their pay.
