That's what I keep reading. I don't think they decided to keep Woody for that reason, but maybe the timing of the move is for Seager's benefit. I believe the last one happened not long before the season.

Yes, the last extension was signed on March 24, 2021. So this one was almost 4 months earlier.

Could be just to show stability with the process. Wouldn't surprise me for it to be done to appeal to all possible targets in general.

Remember this when contemplating the Woodward extension.

The Rangers have extended the contract of manager Jeff Banister through the 2018 season, the team announced. Banister had been signed through 2017 with a club option for 2018. The team picked up the option and added another club option for 2019.

“Jeff set the tone from day one in spring training in 2015 and carried that message throughout the season,” said GM Jon Daniels in a statement. “Through the team’s early season struggles, he was able to keep everyone focused and that led to a memorable finish. We are proud to have him managing the Texas Rangers.”

Two and a half years later, Banny was fired.

That was a period when the Rangers were jumping the gun when it came to contracts. They had no business extending Banister through 2018 before the 2016 season was even played. He'd only been here 1 season. It's just like Odor. One good year and they went nuts locking them down.

With Woody, it's a little different. He's got 3 seasons under his belt, and the team is in an official rebuild. Seems like the plan is put more pieces in place next year, with the idea that a competitive team is being fielded in 2023. Barring clubhouse drama or other issues, he's going to be given a chance to show what he can do with a competitive team. I have no issue with that.

Would I have done this now? Not really. That leads me to think it's probably related to the FA market and trying to demonstrate a commitment to whatever plan they are promoting to their targets.

Exactly.

I think they really like Woody, but what they say should be taken with the idea that managers are hired to be fired, in mind.

Some in the media seem to think that Woody is going to be here for the next several years based on this; we have seen this before though.

White goes 5 innings giving up 3 runs on 9 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6. Definitely not his normal self.

He finished the fall with an ERA of 1.91.

It seems like there were no trades, so far, heading into the roster crunch. Some always think there will be a flurry of trades, but it must be almost impossible to find a trade partner when everyone is trying to make room on their roster.

It looks like we have made it to the final hour with only 11 of 30 teams having already added guys to their 40 man.

The Rangers have made their moves.

Only Duran, Vanasco, and Henriquez were protected.

Neither Latz, Thompson, Ragans, Walker, nor Seise were protected.

Cody and Colina are assigned outright to Round Rock.

Roster at 37.
