Anyone interested in Kyle Gibson at 3 years and $45 million for the rotation?

Also, I wonder if JD is still enamored with Cole Hamels?
I only remember getting a negative response about Gibson. I guess no one is impressed.

Jon Daniels says Rangers will add starting pitching

Middle rotation: Julio Teheran, Kyle Gibson, Gio Gonzalez, Wade Miley, Ivan Nova, Jhoulys Chacin, Dan Straily, Jason Vargas, Brett Anderson

These are guys that fill out the back end of a rotation. Gibson (with the Twins), Miley (Astros) and Teheran (Braves) were on division championship teams last season and did not draw a postseason starting assignment. The Rangers could use one from this group, but only if they also sign someone better. If they sign two of this bunch, it better be because Anthony Rendon or Josh Donaldson is now their third baseman.
Interesting to see how this plays out.

Less enthusiastic about Kyle Gibson than I was about Lance Lynn a year ago. Lynn came with a modest amount of success on his resume. Gibson has never been anything but a back of the rotation/4-5 ERA guy. He did have the one fairly solid season, but other than that, he’s been the very definition of mediocre. At least his presence will save us from trotting out spares on the level of Adrian Sampson. And if Gibson proves to be the 2nd best starter we sign by the end of the offseason (hint: Ryu), then that’s a rotation that isn’t too shabby.

I could definitely live with Minor-Ryu-Lynn-Gibson

Perhaps Rangers see something in him we don’t. We needed a RHP who could eat innings at least. This seems like some bad luck last year and if health gets better we may have found another diamond in the rough

Rangers Sign Kyle Gibson

Gibson showed real promise with a strong full season of work in 2015 before turning in matching 5.07 ERAs in both 2016 and 2017. He turned the corner in 2018, when he ran up a 3.62 ERA over 196 2/3 innings. His 2019 results are disappointing by comparison. After a late lull, he finished with a 4.84 ERA in 160 frames. Those results, it should be noted, can in some ways be attributed to recent health troubles — though none involving his arm. Rather, Gibson lost roughly 25 pounds last winter due to a bout of e-coli, and he was never fully able to put the weight back on and build up to full strength. Late in the season, he missed time due to further gastrointestinal issues when he diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.

my reaction is similar to other people’s here.

lukewarm? At least he has experience and should be able to eat some innings. Guys like allard, palumbo, and Burke probably need more seasoning anyway and we couldn’t really protect them last year.

we need to do more and find more quality.

At least Gibson was acquired for $10 million AAV instead of the $15 that had been mentioned a few weeks back. That way if we have to jettison him in the third year when some prospects are ready it isn't as much money to eat.

Hey, it's a given, right. If Minor and Lynn panned out then Gibson will pan out for sure. LOL!

Why Rangers’ addition of Kyle Gibson sends a much bigger message than past offseasons

Well, that, and this: He never has been the primary target of the winter. Those remain third baseman Anthony Rendon and starter Zack Wheeler. I listed them alphabetically, not necessarily according to priority. I’m not sure there is any separation between them. The Rangers, according to sources, are pushing for both. They are expected to have a face-to-face meeting with Rendon before the winter meetings. It is believed Daniels has already met with Wheeler. If the Rangers don’t get one or either, there are other options, too.
