Rendon's last three years saw him with the following OPS: .937, .909, and 1.010. The three years before coming here Beltre had put up the following OPS: .784, .683, and .919.
He is an outstanding player and would love to have him as he has just gotten better each year. The big difference is that I don't see him as the team leader that Beltre was but very few are. There was just something about his presence and the way he played the game that rubbed off on everyone. From the smile to playing thru incredible pain.

Ha I knew that he finished strong but perhaps it was his second wind. They played him a lot.

Of course I would rather him him start over DDJ. A lot of possibilities at this point
i would rather see him start over DDJ, Choo, Mathis and Oder. I see them all as anchors that keep the team from making the next step. I am not opposed to Santana to being an important player in the Rangers lineup I just have a different vision of where that doesn't stop us from signing FA's or trading for positional needs.

what’s the point in bringing Rendon in if they’re still planning to keep / start Odor?
So, should we just strip down the team, sell off all of our talent and close up shop until Odor retires?

Cost of doing business seems to be increasing. Under 30 guy with some upside
And with a very big flaw. I sure hope another GM saves JD from himself by signing Wheeler soon.

Well Santana doesn't play catcher, so he would never start over Mathis anyway

Trading for Marte is a lateral move over what Santana already provides...

Per Baseball Reference...
Plate Appearances: Santana 511, Marte 586
Batting Avg: Santana .283, Marte .295
OBP%: Santana .324, Marte .342
SLG%: Santana .534, Marte .503
OPS: Santana .857, Marte .845
Homeruns: Santana 28, Marte 23
RBIs: Santana 81, Marte 82
Walks: Santana 25, Marte 25
Stolen Bases: Santana 21, Marte 25
Salary: Santana 537k, Marte 10.3m

And the defensive numbers don't skew wildly in Marrte's favor either, he had negative marks in both dWAR (-.7) and defensive runs (-9) saved in CF

Santana isn't great but his numbers compared favorably and might actually improve if allowed to focus on a position.

Per Rosenthal

Oh, to be free-agent right-hander Zack Wheeler.

His stuff is elite. His career innings total is low. His recent durability is encouraging.

Wheeler has thrown only 749 1/3 career regular-season innings, nearly 1,000 fewer than free-agent lefty Madison Bumgarner, who is only 10 months older. He also is an analytics darling, his fastball velocity ranking in the 94th percentile last season, his opponents’ exit velocity in the 90th, according to Statcast.

As if that’s not enough, Wheeler throws the second-hardest slider in the majors, and FanGraphs’ Ben Clemens made the case in November that the pitcher could be even better if he tweaks his approach with two strikes, throwing his slider more often and/or elevating his fastball.

Wheeler is a solid 3 with No 1 potential
Still like Yu

I know Aaron Sanchez will miss part of the season as he recovers but try and sign him to a minor league contract. I think he made under 2 mill in 2019.

Yep, he is a really good pitcher in the National League.

An ERA around 4.70 against AL batters is very telling except to those who choose to ignore those stats.

He has a 4.70 ERA and a WHIP of 1.48 against the American League. That tells me to run from him. Of course, since JD tends to ignore those kind of stats, Evan might be right.
A reminder.

11:57am: It seems the Wheeler auction could be building to a crescendo. It’s possible and “maybe even probable” that he’ll sign before the Winter Meetings open next week, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network

Okay so what do we do with Mazara? If we play Calhoun in left, Santana in Center and Gallo there's no real place for Mazara unless we put him at 1st, a position he's never played, and hurt our defense. Of course then have to figure out what to do with Solak and Guzman. I guess we could pass on Rendon and play Solak at 3rd, a position he has little experience, and send our best defensive 1st baseman down to AAA.

It would be so great if the Astros waste their money on Wheeler and we get to knock him around for the next 5 years
