Okay so what do we do with Mazara? If we play Calhoun in left, Santana in Center and Gallo there's no real place for Mazara unless we put him at 1st, a position he's never played, and hurt our defense. Of course then have to figure out what to do with Solak and Guzman. I guess we could pass on Rendon and play Solak at 3rd, a position he has little experience, and send our best defensive 1st baseman down to AAA.
Trade Choo and that clears that up. Let Mazara be the primary DH and rotate in the OF to give guys a defensive day off. Also, ease him into 1B by letting him play there 15-25 games there this year.

Yep, he is a really good pitcher in the National League.

An ERA around 4.70 against AL batters is very telling except to those who choose to ignore those stats.
Rendon put up good numbers against NL pitchers. Is his OPS flawed?

I did mention upside reported right?

.944 and 1.050 in interleague play the past two years.

.859 career OPS vs all opponents
.951 career OPS vs. AL

Thanks for bringing that up.

3:37pm: The White Sox are “willing” to push beyond the five-year, $100MM mark in order to sign Wheeler, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports. Whether they’ve actually made such an offer isn’t clear.

I’m not as gung ho about the Wheeler pursuit even tho we need pitching.

it feels like the nationals will get either Rendon or Donaldson. Obviously the best case scenario is Rendon comes here and Donaldson to the nationals.

as much as I hate to say it, Donaldson has hurt us a lot over the course of his career keep him in the NL.

I think Donaldson is going to Philadelphia

I was simply stating that there's no reason to trade for Marte when we essentially already have him on the roster in Santana

Santana has shit to do with Mazara unless he can suddenly play CF

As stated previously, eat Choo's contract and send him to an AL team that needs a DH/ leadoff guy for cheapish

That's the only way we are going to get rid of Choo. We just need to bite the bullet.

Well Santana doesn't play catcher, so he would never start over Mathis anyway

Trading for Marte is a lateral move over what Santana already provides...

Per Baseball Reference...
Plate Appearances: Santana 511, Marte 586
Batting Avg: Santana .283, Marte .295
OBP%: Santana .324, Marte .342
SLG%: Santana .534, Marte .503
OPS: Santana .857, Marte .845
Homeruns: Santana 28, Marte 23
RBIs: Santana 81, Marte 82
Walks: Santana 25, Marte 25
Stolen Bases: Santana 21, Marte 25
Salary: Santana 537k, Marte 10.3m

And the defensive numbers don't skew wildly in Marrte's favor either, he had negative marks in both dWAR (-.7) and defensive runs (-9) saved in CF

Santana isn't great but his numbers compared favorably and might actually improve if allowed to focus on a position.

Also relevant

Age: Santana 29, Marte 31
