My goals for the rest of the offseason

Sign Rendon
Trade Odor
Trade Choo
Sign as many decent to good pitchers to short term contracts as it takes to feel comfortable trading Minor.
Don't do anything stupid.

Great news!

When we did our poll on Wheeler, the vast majority of people wanted the Rangers to sign him, but that was at Kiley McDaniels’ projected 4 years, $68 million. Reports yesterdayindicated that Wheeler already had an offer of at least 5 years, $100 million in hand, and it sounds like it could take as much as $25 million per year over 5 years, or possibly 6 years, to land Wheeler.

Good we get out. He is not worth that kind of money. He belongs in the NL.

Agree with all except trading Minor

And I don't think Rendon signs here if he thinks you're about to trade away arguably your best pitcher, just bad optics

Totally agree. Get Rendon and another quality pitcher.

I would wait until after the dust clears to think about trading Minor and then only if you get a good return. There are going to be some teams who get shut out of their pursuit of pitching because of the costs. In January those teams might offer a good package for a pitcher like Minor. I would think Rendon knows this team is still a year away at least, but either way he would sign before we looked into trading Minor I would think.

A team like the White Sox might be willing to trade for Minor and Odor in a package deal. They really want to compete in 2020.

So you're saying sell him a bill of goods, fake competitiveness and then pull the rug? Yeah that's just bad business for future free agents

Just to be clear, I don't think if Wheelee signs with an AL team that his future ERA will match his past ERA against AL teams. I would expect it to be in the 4.25 to 4.40 range.

No, not at all. If we sell him on Mike Minor pitching here this year, that is one thing. I wouldn't use that as a selling point. In reality, I don't think he makes the decision based on if we win 86 games versus 84 though. I do want to have a good pitcher in Minor's place as well.

What we get for Minor would hopefully make us better while Rendon is still here.

Wheeler for over 100 mill?

id say no thanks to that. It feels like our free agency outlook depends on Rendon or bust now. things could start to go downhill in a hurry if we don’t get him.

From Evan Grant:

"It is unclear where the Rangers go for additional starting pitching, though they remain in the market. They appear to be reserving their “mega” offer for third baseman Anthony Rendon. The next tier of pitchers includes Hyun-Jin Ryu of Los Angeles, Dallas Keuchel of Atlanta and Madison Bumgarner of San Francisco. It’s not clear if the Rangers would play on any of those pitchers or drop down another level to a group that includes the likes of Michael Pineda, Rick Porcello and Julio Teheran."

Sometimes you make sense and sometimes you don't... your stance on Minor doesn't make sense to me

Maybe the Rangers will turn to the Asian market for pitching. Seems like there are two Japanese pitchers available and maybe a Koream pitcher as well.

No harm in that. There are so many opinions that go into these discussions that there are bound to be some opinions that don't make sense to others.

how is a couple of low-level prospects going to make us better
