I assumed Donaldson would be a liability in year 3 of the contract. Rendon at that same age would be in year 7 of his. And actually, Rendon would start his 7th year 6 months younger than when Donaldson would start his 3rd year. That gives us several years where his being good coincides with when our window should open.

Your reckoning of my reckoning is in error.
Okay but Rendon's contract would be in the area of 35M AAV which would financially handcuff the Rangers from signing other players when we reach your open window plus it would block Jung's and Wendzel's progress. What's your solution for that?

If Teixeira can change positions, those guys can too. In fact, one could be traded in a deal that could bring us a final piece should that be necessary. Then we would need one less free agent signing.

The handcuffing would be done by Donaldson's contract as well.

5 yr is long enough. Have not heard anyone wanting 6/7.
With the number of teams lining up to go after Rendon and with what the Nationals offered and he turned down it will come down to who offers the most years and largest AAV. If every team offers 5 years and virtually the same AAV, it will be the team that offers that extra year or more that walks away with the prize

It will take 7 years to sign Rendon and he would turn 36 in the middle of his seventh year. I have no problem with that at all.
More money and 5 yr with options. Nothing in blood yet about 7 yrs.

I don't trust him. He is injured too much and he has made his reputation in Dodger Stadium.

I want to spend, but I want to spend wisely.
That is what happened with Chan Ho Park. He pitched great for the Dodgers and came here and folded like a cheap suit.

The one good thing about signing Donaldson would be that it forces management to make a decision on Solak at 2B.
That is kind of what I said earlier.

For the most part I have less of an issue with a solid position player who just keeps getting better than hoping a pitcher makes it thru a long contract without DL issues or phasing out. So I agree with you on that.

Both of the projections that I posted links to, show him getting a 7 year deal for an AAV of either $30.1 million or $33.5 million.

Yeah, there is so much that can go wrong with a pitcher.

Asking is one thing. Better offers might change his mind.

True but not as much as Rendon's

Rendon is my 1st FA choice but not at any price. Contracts must be smart or you end up with undesirable players not needing to be named. Astros went that "give em' what they want and it did not pan out and Cole is leaving rich and Stros holding the bag.

He hasn't asked for anything yet. Those are projections based on a lot of different things including recent FA history. They are usually fairly accurate.

Well there you go. He may very well accept something less than seven if he did not ask for seven.

But, that is because the asking period hasn't started.

Donaldson's would be more than Cabrera also. You get what you pay for.
All true. I will admit my 1st choice is Rendon but not at a price that handicap the team over the next 3 to 6 years. After that #2 3B would be Donaldson and 3rd would be Moustakas. Yes you may be correct about Donaldson but if we make the 3rd year a team or mutual option then we could walk away from it after 2 years. Also we could add a good starter or 2 to fit around Minor, Lynn & Allard.

The only way I would sign Donaldson as a fallback, is if I intended on trading him at the deadline in 8 months or so.

Whether we agree or not, it is always fun to discuss baseball.
