I know there isn't much grounds for this right now but think of it this way.
1. The Pac12 is starting to act like they are not interested in OU. There is too much of a cultural gap and OU would be the butt of jokes for their "academic" standards. Travel would be expensive.
2. Texas cannot survive without jumping ship. For the issues listed above with OU, Texas is not a fit in the Pac12. I know Texas is a good academic school but it is about "perception." Travel costs to West Coast would be high, especially for other sports. Most importantly, Texas is not a cultural fit with either the Pac12 or B1G.
3. ESPN. ESPN is slowly pushing this idea of a SUPER Conference with the Big 6 SEC schools (Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, and Tennessee) plus a rising Arkansas paired with Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and a rising Oklahoma State. If ESPN can bring this together and get the contract, they would make a fortune. This league would dominate television and college football. It is unsure if the SEC would buy into this idea but ESPN would be able to push their own television deal plus the added revenue for every school.
4. Although not entirely a cultural fit, the SEC is the closest cultural fit to Texas and Oklahoma. Both have that blue collar work ethic mentality. Both regions cover the Biblebelt. Both regions are football first. Both regions have the same cuisine, same mannerism, same expressions, etc. Although Oklahoma and Texas have this western feel to them, they also very much have a Southern feel. Geographically, the SEC would dominate the coastline of one major sea, the Gulf of Mexico. Texas is the last bastion on the Gulf to not be added to the mix. All the major gulf football schools outside of Florida State would not reside in the SEC.
The fact is, the ACC, B1G, and Pac12 are too far away geographically and cultural to fit in with these schools. OU may want to go West but the Pac12 will have little incentive to add OU because OU doesn't bring enough $$$ without Texas.
This Conference would SUCK. Not because they would be bad on the field but they would become too dominate. Too many good teams in one league is a bad thing. They would eliminate each other or as SEC fans put it, "beat each other up." Despite this aspect it may not be far fetched.
