Tanaka is 25 years old, and the Cubs have the #1 minor league system. We also have 3 of baseball's top 10 prospects. At 25, he fits in to our system perfectly.

So why would he be wise to go elsewhere?

Per which ranking?

MLB.com's prospect watch ranking for instance has just 1 Cub prospect in the top 20 (Baez).
SI's prospect ranking has just 1 Cub (Baez) in the top 15, and Bryant ranked #19
Scout.com's ranking has the highest rated Cub at #10

BaseballAmerica's farm rankings has the Cubs tied for #5, which is certainly very good...but certainly not #1.

Hes nothing like Kei Igawa, who was a pretty mediocre pitcher to sign.

Pretty much. I don't know if the Yankees even bothered to look at his stat sheet or anything, but in 2 of his 3 years prior to signing w/the Yankees, he had an ERA in the high 3's.

It was a knee-jerk reaction to not getting Dice-K.

He's a Yankees fan. Prospects joining the team are very rare occurences these days.

I was posting on another website that had asked for surprise teams in 2014. I thought about it and put the Cubs. If they sign Tanaka, and everything goes well, they could contend this year.

- And Theo wouldn't need trick photography for this:

We're still 1 full season away from starting to look seriously into competing.

But, I do agree, (if) we were to land Tanaka, that could open the door to making a move for Price or Carlos Gonzalez.

If we don't land Tanaka, then we'll just sit out another season and mid season probably bring up a big prospect or two, like Bryant and Baez.

They're the fucking Cubs.

That's the uneducated, casual baseball fan response.

You know nothing about what we're doing for our future, so your uneducated response is "it's the Cubs"

Uneducated, Jesus Christ.

You don't get credit in life for things you might do, you have to actually do them. I've been watching baseball for over 30 years; if/when you finally win something I'll eat crow until then it's all talk.

So you think Tanaka would have a better chance winning with the Yankees than the Cubs?

Yankees future looks bad, and they aren't winning this season. Not with Boston in that division

So you're saying of the 3 prospects in the top 10, and the 8 prospects in the top 90, none of them will pan out? Not to mention the good young players we already have up, Rizzo and Castro.

And why would he have zero chance of winning a World Series?

Your response is a lack of knowledge.

Considering they are the Cubs, there is a very good chance none of them pan out. The Cubs are snake bitten. 1908 is a long time ago.

Tanaka seems to prefer the coasts reportedly. However, I wouldn't be surprised if Chicago was an exception to this either. I still expect to see Tanaka in Dodger Blue or Yankee Pinstripes come opening day.

Absolutely. The Yankees are a much better franchise and just by the numbers have a much better shot at winning a WS. And I think the Yankees may be able to compete with the Red Sox. Boston had everything going for them last season, may not play that way this year.

Yankees lost Cano, Jeter is done, and we all know what happened to A-Rod.

I just don't see it.

And after this season, and maybe next, the Cubs will be more ready to win than the Yankees.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying Tanaka isn't going to sign with the Yankees. I'd be surprised if he didn't sign in NY, the Cubs are a long shot.

I'm just saying with a 6 or 7 year deal, his chances of winning will be just as good in Chicago as they would in New York.

What makes you think the Cubs will actually win? Theo did a horrible job in Boston. Theo is still living off the World Series he won in Boston. He left a mess that was amazingly corrected in 1 offseason. Sorry, I'm not buying the Cubs as winners. They have to prove it to the World as far as I'm concerned.

I can't argue with the Yankees future not looking so hot right now, but it will look a lot better if we have Tanaka. It's the exact reason why they will likely sign Tanaka to a contract will make most of the baseball world throw up. Don't be surprised if Tanaka is one of the top 3 highest paid pitchers in baseball a week from today.

If the Yankees DON'T get Tanaka I would almost concede 2014 before it even starts, the Yankees are an 80-85 win team right now, unless Pineda or Banuelos turn into a phenom they're fucked. Tanaka would make them a 90-95 win team and put them in the playoffs. They HAVE to sign Tanaka, they have no choice but to pay stupid money.

I'm not going to sit here and say that something "could never happen". The theory of probability says that anything with a chance of happening that is 1 or greater, can and eventually will happen. Having said that, I've seen shit happen to the Cubs that I can't explain and may never understand, it's beyond bad luck.

So with that in mind, yes. I think that Tanaka has a much better chance at winning a World Series with the Yankees than the Cubs, and so would anyone. I mean, we're up 27-0 since 1908 dude...:noidea:

You honestly think adding one pitcher adds as much as 10 wins? :L

Could not disagree more.

If the Dodgers weren't so willing to throw away millions of dollars the Red Sox would still have guys like Crawford, Gonzalez & Beckett on their team. All with horrible contracts. The new GM of the Red Sox cleaned up Theo's mess. Matsuzaka worked out well didn't he. LOL. Theo is very overrated as a GM as far as I'm concerned.
