(not that I think Boston was really ever in it)

That's hilarious! Spot on too, in my opinion. Not at all clear which team will get Tanaka.

there's optimism surrounding possible kershaw multiyear deal. but some are cautioning: it's been "close" before.

I wonder if this factors in on the Dodgers being all in on Tanaka or not? I think Kershaw could get close to $30 mil per year.

Tanaka has to be signed by some team by next Friday I believe, so not too much longer.

I can't believe its taken the Dodgers this long to extend him.

As for Tanaka, I think his signing will go right down to the midnight hour on the 24th.

Cubs Pushing Hard For Tanaka; Angels Remain Involved

The Cubs are "pushing hard" for Masahiro Tanaka, reports FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal on Twitter. The Angels "remain involved" on the 25-year-old righty, says Rosenthal, along with other teams that have been prominently linked to the Japanese ace (such as the Yankees and Dodgers).
We have heard previously that the Cubs were prepared to make a major offer to Tanaka. Indeed, as club president Theo Epstein has said previously, he "wish[es] there was a free agent market for young players." Tanaka is about as close as things get to such a market.
The involvement of the two Chicago organizations in the Tanaka sweepstakes is an indication of his broad market appeal. (The White Sox are one of a few teams confirmed to have met with Tanaka, though some cold water has since been thrown on their interest.) Both clubs have substantial resources, but neither has qualified for the postseason since 2008 and neither looks primed to break up that trend in 2014. Nevertheless, both teams have made substantial free agent commitments over the last two years to relatively youthful players (Edwin Jackson for the Cubs and Jose Dariel Abreu for the White Sox).

Cubs may offer a lot, but if he cares about winning he won't go there. He'll have ZERO chance of winning there. The Cubs are a very bad team and he won't change that. The Angels, Dodgers, or Yankees would all be much better choices.

I still see the Dodgers or Angels as his biggest suitors.

He can be behind Kershaw and Greinke or be behind Weaver. Scary.

I still see the Dodgers bidding up the Yankees, but the Yankees walking away with Tanaka

I hope so. We are desperate, we really really need another SP.

^^^This

Desperation is a great motivator and I think the Yankees are about to take a huge leap of faith on this guy.

HUGE.

The Cubs and White Sox are serious contenders in this apparently. Tanaka would be wise to go elsewhere though.

Risky, guy was awesome last year but the big leagues are a little different, could he be the next Darvish or could he be the next Kei Igawa.
Yanks better start developing there own pitchers because the competition for these players has never been higher..

Tanaka is 25 years old, and the Cubs have the #1 minor league system. We also have 3 of baseball's top 10 prospects. At 25, he fits in to our system perfectly.

So why would he be wise to go elsewhere?

Because he will have zero chance at winning a WS with the Cubs and will be on a losing team. Prospects don't always pan out.

Hes nothing like Kei Igawa, who was a pretty mediocre pitcher to sign.

So you're saying of the 3 prospects in the top 10, and the 8 prospects in the top 90, none of them will pan out? Not to mention the good young players we already have up, Rizzo and Castro.

And why would he have zero chance of winning a World Series?

Your response is a lack of knowledge.

He's a Yankees fan. Prospects joining the team are very rare occurences these days.

I was posting on another website that had asked for surprise teams in 2014. I thought about it and put the Cubs. If they sign Tanaka, and everything goes well, they could contend this year.

- And Theo wouldn't need trick photography for this:
