JBWM: Stevie Ray Vaughan was hands down one of the best guitarists we have seen or ever will see. He tragically passed away 29 years ago today, but his music and spirit remain very much alive!

It is close...

If you talking just playing the guitar, SRV was the better technician. That's it. If you place a high value on that, then maybe. Hendrix was the innovator, the better songwriter and by a lot. He changed the electric guitar playing game as someone else mentioned. He simply created better music. He was the giant SRV stood on the shoulders of.. and he didn't really didn't build on it. He just took the bluesier part of what Hendrix did and ran with it. Vaughn could play whatever Jimi could play, but so what. All of this is completely subjective, of course.

Jimi Hendrix was the bomb in the late 60's for sure, but SRV was covering everything Hendrix ever did by the time he was 14 years old.

As good as both of them were (sadly I can't say "are"), there's a fella named Joe Bonamassa that blows both of them away.

Welcome to the evolution of music.

I don't like Bonamassa, for some reason he bugs me. He rips a lot from Eric Johnson (who I prefer), which doesn't help. Joe is very talented, just not a fan.

The opinion that Joe blows away Jimi or SRV will be in the minority for sure, and I would guess even Joe disagrees.

SRV got famous at least partially for playing in a Hendrix style, playing Hendrix covers. Jimi changed the direction of modern electric guitar.
Hendrix was a good guitarist but SRV elevated it to a whole new level. Maybe I'm biased because SRV is a fellow Texan.

You like Hendrix because you were in the same generation.

Elevated what? The blues? Jimi was about much more than the blues. SRV is basically an amped up combination of Albert and Freddie King IMO.

I like Vaughn. I just don't think he's anywhere near the level of the artist Hendrix was. I think that's inarguable, actually. If we're talking strictly guitar playing ability or "chops", that's a different story. But mechanical dexterity is not a criteria I find very compelling when assessing the merits of a rock artist.

They were both older that me fwiw.

I prefer listening to SRV more than Hendrix.

Hendrix is the most overrated guitarist of all time.
Fair as your opinion, but a big swing and a miss there sir.

I would take the other Jimmy (Page) as my top guitar player, but Hendrix was stellar imo.

My alltime 5 (+1)

Jimmy Page
Jimi Hendrick
Jeff Beck
Eric Clapton...especially the Cream era
Stevie Ray
BB

I got into the Blues genre a little later in life, but the respect he had among peers from all other genres was major props.

SRV, but @Guns N Guitars is a dumbfuck.

Speaking of dumb fucks you better look in the mirror. This thread is about a preferred guitar player and not about trolling other members. I personally don't care what you think about me and my views. I don't follow you around the forum so if you can't contribute without tossing insults then maybe you shouldn't post on this thread.
