Then again, if a pitcher goes through spring without one bad outing, I'm not too worried either...

For the guys with locked spots, I could give a shit how they do at this point. They SHOULD have VERY specific tasks in mind to accomplish, and putting good stats should NOT be on that task list.

Aubrey Huff, 1B/OF, San Francisco Giants: Everyone says he's in great shape in March, of course, but I'm kind of buying what Huff is selling, to a degree. He credits offseason Pilates for his resurrection. I've seen a few of his spring at-bats, and a return to 2010's 20 homers and 80 RBIs seems realistic.

I have to agree with this 250%. Spring training, especially the first couple of weeks of games, is about getting in shape AND trying out stuff. I've heard lots of times (well, read in the paper) that a particular player is "working on something specific" and nobody cares about the overall stats. For a pitcher, it might be release spot, or changing arm angle or improving a particular pitch. For a batter, he might be working on identifying a particular pitch and trying to do a specific something with it. So bad outings in spring don't bother me at all.

Of course, I'm a guy who has said for years that ST stats are completely useless, so take the above with a grain of salt.

Panik looked like the real deal. Fought off some tough 0-2 pitches then smoked a triple. Went the other way for a single in his first ab. Both hits against lefties.

Panik 3-3 so far... doesn't mean shit but he is one guy I am hoping will pan out so I'll take it!

Melky looking good so far... so is Pill he keeps it up it's gonna be hard to keep him off the roster... Hector doing his best too... Zito doing his best too? Unicorn!

I think we're just giving our first impressions of the players as we see them. Not basing anything on the stats themselves. Using more of a scout's eye, if you will.

And like gp said just first impressions. Although my take on Zito is the final word - he's just looking great with his 2 runs 4 hits in 2 innings, just where he left off last year. Oh I can hardly wait for the 5th day of the rotation when we get to endure the former greatness. Hold onto your hats boys! I feel an 81 mph heater coming!

I do like to see the kids do well. They are facing true MLB pitching. While it's not exactly MLB pitchers on top of their game, it's still the best pitching they've seen. Though I don't put much stock into it, I'd rather see the young guys crushing the ball than struggling.

Also, as gp mentioned, using our own scouting eye is fun too. I like to see/hear, for example, "Panik fought off a couple of tough 0-2 pitches from a lefty and ended up smacking a triple"(which actually happened) rather than "player X hit a double off a first pitch fastball"(hypothetical).
