Sounds like we will be keeping the 4-3 defense

Asked specifically on what type of defense he will play, McCarthy finally said "we're a 4-3 defense." But he added the Cowboys "may have the ability to have some variation there." All along, McCarthy has put the focus on acquiring good players over the specific scheme. Depending on what happens in the draft, the Cowboys could use more of a 3-man front, but for now, it appears the Cowboys are sticking with the four-man base defense.

Not sure what this means other than health, but I saw that Dix played 99.4% of defensive snaps for the Bears last year.

So where do we go now? Not the rest of the draft because I don't know who they like and at this point you need to get lucky to find the right combo of position need and good player to find a guy to start or at least really contribute a lot this year. Other than the Wisconsin Center if they really love him and if he is there when we pick it's not likely we find a year 1 starter or guy to contribute on a high % of downs sans injury. Yes we should be looking for guys that can contribute or come off the bench in case of injury and we still need to add DBs, but what I'm referencing is shoring up our starting 22 or 26 or so with specialty guys. At this point in time I see two big weaknesses - CB and DE. Yes I would like to improve at Safety and Center (depending on their plans) and TE and add some depth at LB and OL, but I look at CB and DE as two positions where adding a veteran is still something that can bring us to the next level and where we could struggle if we don't.

Contrary to popular belief we do have the cap space for one good FA or a few marginal ones. I see the best move as either bringing on Everson Griffin or Logan Ryan. Each is a walk through the door starter that changes our team. We have added a lot of DL this year but the two pass rushers we "added" are still question marks in Gregory and Smith. If we knew for sure one or the other would not only be back but be ready to be a solid passing down pass rush specialist I wouldn't consider Griffin. I'd play Crawford on early downs and go with Gregory/Smith on passing downs, but I can't assume that and if you can't get to the QB you are going to struggle when your DBs are just not very good.

But, what I would prefer is adding Logan Ryan. I love the pick of Diggs at 51, but we really don't know if he'll ever be a good NFL starter, let alone year 1. Maybe if you bring in Ryan you regret paying him if Diggs is a day 1 starter and one or more of Lewis/Brown/Awuzie steps up, but he raises the floor so much for this team. If we signed Ryan, I think at worst we would be "a little below average" at CB. I'd be 100% fine with Kirkpatrick also, but I think Ryan is just a better (and more expensive) player. With the threat of the virus and now after today, the end of the draft, I suspect these asking prices are going to be coming down and guys are going to sign shorter deals and look to make their money next year or the year after. I'd like to see us bring in one more starter type in the next week or two.

I think they will add a couple more free agents. From what Stephen said, they are going to stick very close to their board today, so I think it's up in the air now, but the draft thus far has left them in fantastic position to draft BPA and then fill one or two holes in FA and really be ready to rock

Looks like Diggs was the, or at least one of the, trade up targets.

The Cowboys attempted to find a trade partner on Day 2, looking to move up and grab Diggs, a big defensive back (6-1, 205) with the ability to fill in Byron Jones’ spot as one of the team’s starting outside corners.

“We spent a lot of time (Friday) thinking about trading up,” Jones said. “But the thing, of course, about this trading thing now is that you have to have someone to trade with. You’ve got to be ready and you’ve got to do all the work as though you have several of them wanting to trade with you.

“We couldn’t get those trades. Nobody wanted to trade them.”

The Cowboys were fortunate that Diggs was still available at Pick 51. The younger brother of Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs felt he made a good connection with the Dallas front office during the pre-draft process, particularly on visits via video conferencing.

I would prefer a 4-3 with a little 3-4 mixed in.. I have always liked the 4-3

That is the plan. Nolan was talking about how subtle the difference is at times during the two. A guy takes one step up and puts his hand down and a 3-4 just became a 4-3. He said it is more about getting your best players on the field. We will be base 4-3 but show many different looks which is a blessing after the predictability of the last couple of years.

Am I the only person who doesn't really think the Vikings did such a great job with the draft? I mean they had two 1st rounders (one late) so they SHOULD get some good players.

I thought they did really good. I think they possibly traded back too much which allowed them a ton of picks today - 16 - I think but that allowed them to move in and get some guys. I think they ended up with 15 players in the draft. You have to figure half of those won’t make the game day roster- at least I wouldn’t think. I’m not sure what they lost in FA but their roster the last few years has been stacked.

Cowboys should sign Ryan. They are an injury away from disaster at CB.
