It was also used extensively by the Aztecs before the Europeans arrived. In that case it was a someone on both sides of the victim twisting a stick with a rope tied between them. They found pictures of it on the pyramids and surviving structures. I wonder if the Spaniards picked it up from them or if they both came up with it themselves?
