Fun fact. It was originally a form of execution in Spain. I learned that recently in a book I'm reading...

It was also used extensively by the Aztecs before the Europeans arrived. In that case it was a someone on both sides of the victim twisting a stick with a rope tied between them. They found pictures of it on the pyramids and surviving structures. I wonder if the Spaniards picked it up from them or if they both came up with it themselves?

If I had to guess I would say that is Indonesia, where it was also used, not Spain where it was invented.
