The word itself isn't inherently racist per se. But it is often used in highly questionable situations.

A lot of white Americans see a young black male in a hoodie and call him a thug for no reason other than being a young black man in a hoodie.

I imagine that a lot of players have been called thugs for similar reasons and are not keen on the word.

FTR, it wouldn't be particularly better if Beilein had called them hoodlums or straight up criminals.

I don't remember Sherman being a dirty player so I agree. Beilein said he was talking about lazy players and meant to say "slugs". I'm not sure that's any better. So you meant to say "slugs" but while looking around the room at a bunch of tattooed black dudes "Thugs" came out?
