I don't think it is.It’s not racist. Heck, it’s probably used more against white guys than black guys.

Fuckers need to buy a dictionary.
How about Ruffian?

unless you are talking hockey.
that's right. Thanks. My mistake. In hockey we generally call them goons
Scallywag?
A lot of white Americans see a young black male in a hoodie and call him a thug for no reason other than being a young black man in a hoodie.
The word itself isn't inherently racist per se. But it is often used in highly questionable situations.

I imagine that a lot of players have been called thugs for similar reasons and are not keen on the word.
FTR, it wouldn't be particularly better if Beilein had called them hoodlums or straight up criminals.
Hoodies, particularly with the hood up, are kind of thugish.

If you're a guy like Burfict and out there to hurt people you're a thug. Other than that the word is best avoided. I do remember a lot of the media and politicians using "thug" to describe terrorists, especially ISIS.
Calling Burfict a thug seems reasonable. Calling ISIS thugs is reasonable. OTOH, calling Richard Sherman a thug is NOT reasonable. Beillein calling his players thugs is NOT reasonable. That's the problem.
The word thug became a euphemism for criminal. Accusing someone of being a criminal who has done nothing criminal is a bad look.
