I was told the eagles were in cap hell a couple years ago and then just kicked the can down the road to now. What happened?
The day will come where hard cap moves will have to be made.
Remember DeMarcus Ware being cut by Dallas?

On a side note, Slay looks like he was slayin' off the field?

Philly is going to like Slay. Is he a top 5 CB anymore? Probably not. But I’d put him in the top 10 and he isn’t one of those CB’s who will only stay in one spot. He will follow the opposing teams #1 WR wherever he lines up, including the slot.
He is also a really good guy off the field. He gets involved with the community and will hold impromptu football camps for kids and he is one of the few guys who will sign as many autographs as the kids want.

Hate to lose Slay, but Detroit is trying to build a New England JV squad of their re-treads and Slay no longer fit. If Philly trades him to New England in the future, Detroit will give Belichick a 1st round pick for a 40 year CB.

oh still an upgrade. But the shit team thing doesnt fly, they always were shit. We always see truly elite corners fall off a cliff, they usually do, you dont see it coming.....regardless hes a massvie upgrade over what they had.
Well he played on a shit team...terrible excuse but look at the 3-4 seasons before he was pretty damn good. Maybe that's just what he needs. Easily a huge need for the Eagles and better than any player in that secondary. Huge upgrade

Problem is, most teams massage the cap, not just Cap Guru Howie.

Dallas massaged it so well they lost their best corner and starting DE just now.

It wasn't personnel decisions that would be hard. It was cap hell was coming.

Would Bill only abuse the Lions for a third? I assumed it would be for the #3 pick and the Pats take Tua.

The Harmon trade was for a swap of late round picks whatever that meant. I heard on the radio that Harmon was a third round pick and that they meant was that Harmon was a swap for a third round pick. There is still nothing being announced anywhere ad the trade has not officially been completed. Then this morning I heard that the third round pick from the Eagles for Slay might be going to the Patriots. The shit that goes on in the NFL takes the league years to get right, the Patriots will probably end up with a 2025 9th rounder.

this doesnt make any sense.
Byron Jones he just signed the biggest contract for a DB is at 16.5 AAV 8.32% of cap
Slay just signed for a 16.7 AAV 8.41% of cap

How is that a steal? he has the largest AAV for a DB in all of the league?

I wanted both back in Dallas, but had they matched those two deals and Cobbs deal, the cap space they have would be pretty much gone, and hurt signings next season.

there is a difference between unable to pay & unwilling to pay.
We always knew both would be gone in FA. (Although I did want to keep Quinn honestly)

This is how you keep from going to cap hell.

Exactly as Banner has stated. Other positions have gotten resets but CB hasn't yet when it was due for one. That will likely come with the upcoming new Ramsey contract which will probably pay around $20M a year.

What they gave up isn’t that bad at all, and if he can return to form the contract will be fine too

I agree with you. However, over the past few years I have seen a number of posts were people are saying the Eagles are in or about to be in cap hell but it never materializes.

the year to watch is 2022 when the dead money from a lot of the contracts (pretty much all of last years deals) that end but include money allocated out over years after which the contract ends will kick in

I can see the point but to be honest I am not even remotely worried. This is the guy that managed to get out from the horrible contracts for players signed under the Chip Kelly Era. Taking a quick look at the 2022 season the Eagles currently only have 19 players under contract for that season and are projected to be $90 mil under the cap and that is before the raise that will happen. Now with that said only 19 players under contract is a problem. There are 2 high dead cap possibilities form that season Lane Johnson ($16 mil) and Brandon ($12 mil) but they both become reasonable hits after Post Jun 1. Lane Johnson will probably get an extension before 2022 but Graham could be a casualty but they will probably wait until after June 1 when his cap hit is only $4 mil.

2020 $198.2 million
2019 $188.2 million
2018 $177.2 million
2017 $167.00 million
2016 $155.27 million
2015 $143.28 million
2014 $133 million
2013 $123 million

Based on the above data on how the salary cap has changed year to year I think it is safe for us to estimate that the salary cap will be somewhere in the area of $20-23 million more cap space in 2022 than there is now. Furthermore the NFL TV deals come up for renewal in 2022 so in all likelihood that is going to give a major boost to salary cap way higher than the current projection of $20-23m more.
