He put a request into the league in March 2010 that he wanted to change to #6......way before he decided if he was leaving Cleveland or not.

Pretty much. No one is saying that it wasn't a smart business decision, just that the reason he gave was lame. If memory serves, he even went as far as to say the league should just retire it.

I don't care how often he changes his number, if I were in his or Kobe's position, I'd probably change my number every 2-3 years.

Chicago already had MJ's number retired at the time. He wore 45 for the final 22 games of the season and playoffs. Then switched back to 23 for the following season.

MJ had the option back then. Any player can chose to have their number taken out of retirement. He just decided to take #45 because that's the number he originally wanted when he came into the league.
