The Isles and Tavares are kinda reminding me of the Leafs during Sundin's prime.

Except the Leafs made 2 Conference Finals and only failed to get past the first round once during Sundin's prime, mostly thanks to CuJo. But man, how much better things could've been if he had anything resembling a top line winger at his side for more than 1 season. You look at the Isles and their comparative lack of any success over this span and I kinda wonder how Tavares hasn't lost his shit yet.

This thread is over 3 years old.

Did every player who has played for the Leafs since 1968 waste his career?
Well no, not exactly - many did good things on other teams. Tavares should probably explore that route too.

The Isles have nothing to offer him from the generation of players he belongs to. Period. Their best defenceman has already asked out, the only other guy on the team who creates nearly as much offence as JT is going to walk for free in 3 months, the goalie situation isn't ideal even if Halak were healthy...

Like the article says, unless the Isles suddenly become willing to move their prospects for help for JT they might as well just move him now. Nothing they're doing at the moment makes a lick of sense.

I completely disagree. So Dale Hawerchuk wasted his career in Winnipeg? Henrik Lundqvist has yet to win anything with the Rangers. I can go on & on. There have been so many terrific players who've spent their careers with teams that never won the cup. Tavares will make a decision either this offseason, but most likely next as to what he wants to do. At that time the Islanders will know where he stands.

Things aren't as bad as you might think for the Islanders going forward. Pulock should be ready next year on defense & Pelech is apparently expected to be fine They've got a number of good defense prospects in the system as well like Wotherspoon & Somerby.

The Isles are loaded with goalie prospects. They just signed Eamon McAdam from Penn St. They've got Ilya Sorokin & Linus Soderstrom playing in Eurpoe. Halak is signed for 2 more years. Greiss has 1 year left on his deal & then theirs Bereube who they got off waivers from the Kings. I'm not worried about finding a goalie.

As for forwards they can move guys around. They don't seem interested in signing Okposo. That's how things have been since the offseason. Barzal almost made the team out of training camp this year. He'll get a long look at camp again. If Nielsen leaves as a free agent Barzal can take his spot. Nelson has had a solid year. Lee's numbers are down a bit, but he's been doing the right things. I'll be surprised if Dal Colle is ready, but he seems to play better with a talented Center on his line. If that's all he needs he might make the team. There's always free agency.

We also don't know what Snow is going to get for Hamonic. We'll see what happens at the draft.

The bottom line is the Isles have Tavares locked up for two more seasons beyond this one. They'll know what he wants to do well in advance of free agency & if he is dealt at some point in the next 2 years he won't be given away.

Would you say the same thing about the Capitals in regard to Ovechkin up to this point in his career?

Would I say that the Capitals have wasted having Ovechkin on their roster? To a certain degree, yes.

Yes, same way the Rangers have wasted Hank's, but, at least they have been trying not to.

It's not like the Capitals haven't been trying to win. They've made moves just like the Rangers have. We'll find out soon enough if this years Caps team can get it done. They're certainly the favorites to come out of the East.

Maybe more recently they have been trying, Idk if i'd say they tried for most of his career. I'm not too sure of many moves they have made to improve the time, outside of the last 2-3 seasons.

Not every player (good, bad or great) wins the Cup. Henrik and the Rags have had considerable playoff success (eg. SCF, ECF). Tavares has never been to round 2; that's a big difference.

Anyway, I still consider Tavares a young player so if he feels loyal to the Isles he has plenty of time to find team success.

Every player doesn't win the Cup. Marcel Dionne had a great career in the NHL. He never got to hoist Lord Stanley, but his brother who had a much shorter career in the NHL did. It happens. Mike Gartner played a long time & put up big numbers for a bunch of teams. He was set to win a Cup with the Rangers in 94. Then he got traded at the trade deadline. Sometimes it's all about being at the right place at the right time.

Oh trust me I know, no team in the last 4 seasons have played more games than the Rangers, but sadly, outside of 3 ECF visits and 1 5 game Stanley Cup visit, we don't have the ultimate prize to show for it.

And when the Kings had Marcel Dionne I think it was perfectly fair to say that they were wasting having the future Hall of Famer on their roster.

It's easy to shy away from trading away the farm when Forsberg is playing so well for the Predators. The Oshie trade was a good move. Signing Williams was huge. This post season is obviously big for the Caps.

The Williams signing was one of the biggest ones they've made in recent time. Huge playoff performer, who i'm sure will come up big for them come crunch time. Oshie deal? Good regular season player, ghost in the playoffs.

Could you imagine this team with Forsberg on it? Unreal.

I think that's pretty indisputable to this point, frankly. To have a guy score 500 goals in ten years and never have made it past the second round? That's brutal.

Nobody is saying the Isles have failed JT because they haven't won a Cup. Please read and comprehend prior to smashing the keyboard to angrily reply.

And ditto when it comes to you naming every prospect in the Isles' system - none of that is helping the Isles make the most of JT's prime years. By the time any of them are contributing significantly he will be pushing 30. As I and the article said, unless these prospects are moved for controllable NHL talent the Isles might as well ship JT off to help the next generation because the writing will be on the wall about the present team.
