I have followed the Rangers minor leagues for about as long as they have had a team and there are two things I cannot figure out about minor league talent evaluators. The first is when a player's stats in the minors aren't as good as the hype from the evaluators and yet the hype remains the same. The second is when the stats are better than what the evaluators say about them and yet they never get any hype no matter how good their stats are. Martin Perez's career is an example of the first and Alex Claudio's career is an example of the second.

Rangers GM Jon Daniels told reporters Saturday that he’s unsure whether the 46-50 club will buy over the next week-plus. If they do, though, Daniels indicated that the Rangers will seek controllable starting pitching, per Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News (on Twitter). Everyone wants controllable starting pitching, so that’s not surprising, but it’s clear Texas needs it more than a lot of other teams do. After all, three members of the Rangers’ rotation – Yu Darvish, Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross – are scheduled to become free agents after the season.

Here is an idea JD. Sell pieces off of this team and trade for minor league pitchers that you can develop into controllable starting pitching over the course of the next couple of seasons.

A note from Scott Lucas about Yohander Mendez.

Two straight gems from Mendez, who has fanned seven or more batters in six of his last eight starts. In his first 11 starts, that happened only once. Another stat:

April/May: 48 strikeouts, 30 walks plus HBPs
June/July: 48 strikeouts, 15 walks plus HBPs

Well said. It would be nice to have a couple of more young pitchers at high A or AA who are doing well with upside. I Like Mendez, Jurado,Sadzeck and Ragans but we could use a couple of more. Btw I have also been with this team since day 1
