Like an idiot, I complained about the effect of the tax code on graduate students, and so obviously I was told I was just taking advantage of the taxpayers and need to get off the government welfare and contribute to society in a more profitable way, so that was fun.

By who? Sorry, I think that might be "by whom?" Apologies again to our Canadian friends...

By whoum?

True, but Ohio (and all other states) don't want to send a guy who diddled 16 year olds when he was in his 30s to the Senate.

Makes me think of Frank's Little Beauties from Always Sunny...

The key to taxes is not paying them. Tax aviodance is an art, tax evasion is a crime.

Start up an S corp and funnel all your research and expenses through it. Maybe dabble in a little reselling of gift cards to show a tiny bit of income. And then write off damn near everything. You won't be paying taxes as your taxable income should be too low - just remember to give yourself a small salary at year end to keep the IRS off your tail. The only outlay of this is whatever it costs to have an S corp annually - probably 500 bucks or so plus whatever it costs to do your taxes - if this is less than what you're paying in taxes I'd look into it.

I am not an econ major. Can someone explain how 35% of zero is different than 20% of zero?
