it may look like a lot bigger than it is cause Alex Smith alone will command a big piece.

Yep, quarterback is an expensive position. Could take up close to half of that just with Smith's new contract, assuming he wins a game or three in the playoffs. Even if they go with another veteran, we should probably look at Matt Hasslebecks 3 year, 20 million dollar deal as a benchmark minimum for any quality vet at the position.

Which I'd be happy to see the 49ers get Smith back for that, it's a hell of a lot better than 6 years, 60 million.

My first reaction is, I bet this money gets used up fast.

But $16.7M is probably about an average amount of cap space I would think, league wide.
So maybe some guys re-sign for a hometown discount? Guys like Braylon, Ginn, Reggie Smith, Larry Grant, etc.

" Fitzpatrick's $9.83 million annual average only makes him the 16th highest paid starting quarterback in football"

Something to keep in mind.

yeah, good starting point. in the end i think he'll get a little more, but good starting point.

To me, Smith misses too many throws to try to command any kind of deal. I'd rather see us spend less money on Josh Johnson this off season.

Alex Smith's contract will also depend on how far he goes into the post-season.
He could be:

1) one and done
2) win one game and then lose to the Packers
3) if we can pull off a victory at Lambeau and/or Superbowl victory (which is not out of the question)

Option 1) is $2M, (2) is $7M, (3) is $12M. :-)

Does the smiley indicate the whole post is in jest?

Yeah 75% of it is in jest. But there is some truth to it.

If Alex has a playoff bye week, and then 49ers are one and done, you have to admit people will question re-signing him. There will be questions like should we trade the farm for Luck, or trade for Peyton if the Colts draft Luck and go into rebuild mode, etc. All the analysts will say we have a team built to win a championship right now, with no championship QB. The critics will be cut-throat.

If Alex wins round 1 and then loses at Lambeau, it will be a good season but the critics will still say that Rodgers was the better QB of that 2005 draft.
So this will be overall a good result, Alex should get re-signed.

If Alex and the 49ers can win at Lambeau then Alex becomes the hero and I don't see how he would not get re-signed.

I disagree more with your numbers than the premise. If he got 5mill before this season, I can't fathom him taking less in the future if things keep on course.

Kind of tired of everyone assuming the packers will make it to the NFC championship.

Who do you think will defeat them at home?

Saints, Cowboys, Lions, Bears, Falcons, or Giants?

You need a team with a good front 4 that can get to the QB, and a decent secondary. Maybe the Cowboys, Lions, or Giants. We'll get to see the Lions twice against the Pack before the season is up. That will be a good indication of how the Lions match up.

Just saying that anything can happen. Any one of those teams can do it. Thats why they play the game.

I can see the Saints Giants and Bears getting a W. Not so much the Cowboys, Falcons, Lions.
