I thought it would be a good idea, based on our preparations for the upcoming draft, to look at how two perennial playoff teams, have put together their offensive lines through the draft.

We all know our draft history. Enough said.

Saints starters:

LT - Terron Armstead - 2013 - 3rd round pick from Arkansas Pine Bluff
LG - Ben Grubbs - free agent from the Ravens
C - Brian De La Puente - not drafted by Saints
RG - Jahri Evans - 2006 - 4th round pick from Bloomsburg
LT - Zach Stief - 2006 - 7th round from Northwestern

Other notable Saints OL draft picks:

T - Charles Brown - 2012 - 2nd round from USC - recently demoted to backup
T - Carl Nicks - 2008 - 5th round from Nebraska - I believe he's still on the team
T - Jermon Bushrod - 2007 - 4th round from Towson State - now starting for the Bears

Packers starters:

LT - David Bakhtiari - 2013 - 4th round from Colorado
LG - Josh Sitton - 2008 - 4th round from Central Florida
C - Evan Dietrich-Smith - not drafted by the Packers
RG - T.J.Lang - 2009 - 4th round from Eastern Michigan
LT - Don Barclay - not drafted by the Packers

Other notable Packers OL draft picks:

T - J.C. Treeter - 2013 - 4th round from Cornell - backup
T - Derrick Sherrod - 2011 - 1st round from Mississippi State - backup ( a bust)
T - Bryan Bulaga - 2010 - 1st round from Iowa - on IR - injury prone
G/T - Marshall Newhouse - 2010 - 5th round from TCU - backup
T - Daryn Colledge - 2006 - 2nd round from Boise State - never really justified draft position - off team
G - Jason Spitz - 2006 - 3rd round from Louisville - effective starter for years
C - Scott Wells - 2004 - 7th round from Tennessee - That name looks familiar!!!

Summary: High offensive line draft picks for these two teams haven't panned out for one reason or another. Lower round picks, most from smaller schools, have flourished.

If we don't take Jake Matthews, it won't be a disaster as long as we can scout, draft, and develop properly!!!

Off the top of my head, the 49'ers line has three #1 draft picks!

Niners oline has 3 first rounders off the top of my head.

Saints and Packers have top 5 QBs. Packers have the best QB in the league, imo. The Rams also beat the Saints badly in the trenches when they played earlier this year.

The Rams aren't the Saints or Packers. The Rams are probably going to be winning football games with defense and running the football. Thats what Fisher did with the Titans. Fisher also never draft olinemen in the first round, though. But they have to draft somebody and we certainly gave DJ Fluker a very long hard look last year.

Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers, being top 5 quartebacks, couldn't prevent their higher round offensive line draft selections from being demoted in favor of lower offensive line draft selections. That is more to the point I am making.

The Rams, being the Rams, need to hire away some Saints and Packers scouts!

I get ya. Note their lack of first round WRs, too. Nailing the middle and later rounds is key in the NFL

If we are going to make any headway on upgrading the O-line, Fisher is going to have to concede his tendency to not take an O-lineman in the first round. There is just too much talent to whiff on players just because he has some coaching axiom that governs a portion of his thought processed even though that axiom could be perceived as a minor one at best and somewhat flawed.
