This is about what I expected to sign this offseason. Need an experienced vet and to draft a young CB. This fits. Makes sense to me.

Broncos signed CB Ronald Darby, formerly of Washington, to a three-year, $30 million contract.

Darby gets $19.5 million in guarantees. The Broncos went into free agency needing to overhaul their cornerback depth chart, and this transaction is step one into filling that team need. Darby, 27, will play outside corner in Vic Fangio's Cover 2 defense. He's been an up-and-down starter since coming into the league as a speedy (4.38 forty) second-rounder. Darby has recently played with Washington and Philadelphia. Expect Denver to make at least one more notable move at corner this offseason

Not thrilled with the Darby signing, but I don't konw a ton about him. I don't see him as a CB 1, but more of a CB 2 or 3. I hope I am wrong.

Not too bad. Good tackler from what I can remember about him

Darby has elite speed and hops. I think he tackles well in the open field. He can get eaten up by great route runners, he can go for the double fake - and is over whelmed by good blocking in the run game (which can be said of the best CBs). I think he is a pretty good value at $10 million per year -and someone who can whittle down the Chiefs edge on speed in their offense. This is a good signing IMO. Fangio will fix him.

I like that he can come in and be a solid-good player for us. With OJ, Callahan, and Darby we don’t NEED to go CB with pick 9 that gives us some wiggle room. I definitely think we will before the end of the 3rd but we’re not so desperate anymore.

Not sure I agree, but a little less desperate. Both Callahan and Darby struggle to stay healthy. If some how they are both hurt at the same time, it is a tough spot.

I think that is kind of what DUFFMAN is saying though... We could still very likely go CB at #9, but it takes some pressure off. As I said to you in a previous thread, I am on the bandwagon of signing a vet CB like Darby, draft a CB early and seeing how OJ and Bassey develop. Bassey will probably never be a start but provides good depth. OJ could be a possible starter. We still need a young CB and picking at #9 if the BPA is a CB like Farley, Horn or Surtain then don't shy away from it. Generally, fans draft more off need then teams in terms of reaching, but at least we have a little bit of flexibility when it comes to drafting BPA if it comes down to two different positions when we go on the clock. Right now the value at CB seems perfect for #9, but who knows when the actual draft rolls around what will be there... I don't think Darby factors HUGE into us drafting a CB early. I guess this is what I was expecting so it doesn't change that for me, but I also get what DUFFMAN is saying. I think he is essentially agreeing with you. Basically, I look at Darby as replacing what Bouye was last year... Callahan's contract is up after this year and often injured, although he played great last year. OJ and Bassey are really our only two young CBs right now so drafting a CB high seems very likely. Be interesting if we bring in another vet CB of lesser value.

Makes you wonder if we could also go after a S like Anthony Harris or Keanu Neal.

I have a feeling we really may not be able to depend on Callahan.. As good as he was last year... His injury history is not good.

CB
Callahan (Can't depend on him)
Darby
Ojemudia
Draft Pick
Free Agent
Bassey

** Remember. Bassey and Duke Dawson are coming off severe knee injuries, on top of Callahan injury concerns. That is a lot to worry about going into next year.

Dawson could also get a shot at safety, as much as I like Dawson as I personally know him... He hasn't made a great impact on special teams. and now he is coming off a pretty bad knee injury late in the season.

Do you think Darby is as good or better then Bouye? I am not sure, and Darby has had more injuries. I hope we don't take a flyer on Farely as he also has some injury concerns. Having 3 CBs that with injury concerns is a lot of risk, especially coming off a year when we had like every CB we signed end up on the IR. I think there are some guys that very talented at the top of the draft, and some guys that could develop later in the draft.

I hope if we pick up another CB it's someone like Malcolm Butler or Xavier Rhodes. Shaquill Griffin or William Jackson would be nice but I'm thinking they'll be way too expensive.

Here's what PFF had to say about Darby.

It's been an odd career for Darby, who has now had productive seasons for three different teams in his six NFL seasons. The problems in between have been injuries and ineffectiveness, and 2020 is the first season in which Darby has played at least 600 snaps since 2016. He's best in man coverage, where he has the speed and shiftiness to hang with a variety of receivers. Darby has graded in the 92nd percentile in single coverage since entering the league. The knock on Darby has always been a lack of interceptions, both in college and in the NFL; he has just eight in his career. But for man-heavy teams looking to make life difficult on outside receivers, he is worth another look as he hits free agency for the third straight season.

---------------

Obviously the knock on him has been injuries but 2020 was the first time he's played 16 games so it's not as if he's coming off an injury like our other CB's.

According to PFF Darby was rated a 76 last year compared to Bouye’s 55.6. Now obviously PFF isn’t the be all end all when it comes to rankings but Darby was Tied for 1st last year in the NFL in pass deflections so we at least know he can play man very well.
