I've tried the Broncos once before- 1988- Dorsett. It lasted about 3 games. Now Arizona and Emmitt, I quickly became an Anquan Boldin fan. I stuck with them for awhile. Never against the Star though.

Which, I think, means it was just as much about money as it was doing Romo a "favor".

That depends. I'm betting it was a 6/1 designation. If it's a 6/1 designation, then releasing Romo now doesn't favor Dallas in any way - which then I think would be fair to say it was a favor to Romo.

Don't think it is an outright release. Dallas needs Romo's cap money later this summer to finish filling out the roster. A savings of ~$5m doesn't get it done. Dallas is going to need all $14m that can be freed up.

Edit: Sorry, did not see the tweet until just now.

Best for the Cowboys since they wouldn't get any value in a trade and best for Romo so he can choose his destination. Likely best scenario for both and they can say all they want about favors but it's a business in the end.

The best scenario for Dallas would have been to trade Romo after 6/1 - this is indisputable. Someone like NYJets, Jaguars, Bills, etc would have ponied up a draft pick in 2018.

Not shipping Romo off to some purgatory for the twilight of his career was a favor. Dallas did not have to release him tomorrow - the Cowboys cap position won't change one bit, until June.

Who's going to wait around until June 1 to find their QB? What little value he has right now would have been diminished as each one of the teams needing a QB made their moves in the off-season. The only way that would have worked is if a contender had a season ending injury and felt they HAD to get a QB.

That would be assuming a team would give up a draft pick and take on the money owed, knowing he would likely be released anyway, correct?

Cowboys Releasing QB Tony Romo Thursday
Nate Bouda 1 hour ago Broncos, Cowboys 0 Comments

Update:

Adam Schefter and Todd Archer reporting that the Cowboys are, in fact, releasing Tony Romo on Thursday.

  • Pro Football Talk reports that the Cowboys will designate Romo as a Post-June 1 release, which will spread out his cap hit over two years.
  • According to Ian Rapoport, Romo is not expected to quickly sign with a team and will take a “Manning-like” tour around the league to explore all of his possible options.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Romo as a post-June 1 release will free up $14 million in available cap space while creating a staggering $10.7 million in dead money.

———-

Jason La Canfora is hearing that there’s a “very strong likelihood” that the Cowboys will release veteran QB Tony Romo on Thursday, barring a strong trade offer.

  • La Canfora adds that once Romo is on the open market, he will have “significant interest” in signing with the Broncos and Texans.
Mike Klis of 9News reported earlier in the week that Broncos GM John Elway is prepared to pursue Romo if/when he’s officially released by the Cowboys.

An agent source tells Klis that the Broncos are actually Romo’s preferred landing spot. However, Denver won’t be the only team in the mix to sign Romo.

One of these teams is expected to be the Texans, but there are some questions about allocating more money to the quarterback position after they spent big money to get Brock Osweiler last year.

Meanwhile, the Broncos have a great defense and are well positioned for him to step in and win games. On top of that, they would be able to pay him a market-value deal. Although, many expect it to include a reasonable base salary to go along with incentives based on performance and playing time.

Romo, 36, is entering the fourth year of his seven-year, $119.5 million contract that included $55 million guaranteed. He stands to make base salaries of $14 million (2017), $19.5 million (2018) and $20.5 million (2019).

In 2016, Romo appeared in one game and completed three of four passing attempts for 29 yards and a touchdown for the Cowboys.

We’ll have more regarding Romo as the news is available.

Sure, but when you have teams like, Jacksonville for example, who have $70m in cap space to spend, and they HAVE to spend a significant chunk of that, Romo's contract is hardly a roadblock considering it was unguaranteed beyond 2017.

Then factor in teams like Jacksonville, Buffalo, NYJets haven't had a good QB in ages and are not too far from being playoff contenders, who in all honesty probably are not able to sign Romo on the open market - sacrificing a conditional pick a year from now is not too much of a stretch.

And remember, any compensation Dallas would potentially receive is better than nothing. Nothing is what Dallas gets from releasing him. Which is why I say it's fair to call this a favor to Romo. He now gets his pick of contenders.

You're missing my point a little I think. The options aren't/weren't just Houston and Denver. A team like Jacksonville would probably wait, especially considering they already have a QB they are willing to move forward with, but also see the need for an upgrade. A team like Buffalo, who might draft a rookie QB this year, would possibly be in line. The NYJets, etc.

It basically boils down to Romo wanted the possibility of playing for a contender (read Houston or Denver), and Jerry granted his wish. Jerry did not have to do that. Thus, a favor was granted.

Edit: Just informed Buffalo re-signed Tyrod Taylor.

Can be viewed as a favor for not sending him to Jacksonville I guess, but they are so many pieces away it hardly makes sense for them, IMO anyway, to trade for a year or 2 of Tony, or however long he'd stay upright. Buffalo just re-signed Tyrod to a re-structured deal. I can see the "favor" part but it also saves Dallas the most cap space, so I guess it depends on how you want to look at it. My initial thoughts again were, could be both

The cap space was going to be saved after 6/1 no matter what. Everyone knew Romo was going to be gone via trade or release - 6/1 was always the magic number. The fact that Romo is in control of where he goes, and not going to the highest bidder, in my eyes, was a thank you for his time in Dallas, and for the way he handled himself this past season.

According to many outlets. No trap here. Devastated.
The time is right for Romo to move on but It's still a sad day for Cowboys fans. He was the epitome of class his entire career in Dallas.

Likely chance of a trade post 6/1 wasnt very good again, unless a team had an injury. Most teams would probably want their QB situation sorted out so that it would help signing other guys, but then again Garcon is signing with a team with no QB on the roster? Who knows

Why make the announcement and not just do it tomorrow? Trying to fish for a last minute patsy?

Looking at the history of the QB trade market, smart money says there would have been a suitor for Romo. But if you believe all the rumors, Tony has his heart set on 1 or 2 places. Denver has been the talk since mid-season. Looks like Romo will get his wish.

I'll just leave it at that. No need to rehash this any further.

Denver is said to be his preferred spot Ive read, but I think Houston might be my choice. All good

Regardless that this had to be done ...it will be a sad sad day.

It's an end of an era for Cowboys nation. I take a small bit of solace that his last pass was a TD.
Tony Romo was, is and will always be my favorite all time player. Any team, Any sport.

I will be routing my ass off for him where ever he ends up.

Houston is probably as good a choice, roster wise.

I think Romo wants Denver because he knows Elway can and will do what it takes to put a contender on the field. I don't know if there is as much trust in the Houston front office.

I would agree w the Houston FO, they did sign B.O. to that contract and yes that stinks. I just think their Oline is better for Romo and would hate to see him get crushed in Denver. Could happen anywhere I guess, hell he didnt stay healthy behind the Dallas Oline
