Moving is good, but no they don't auto lock at 10k. It's kind of a legacy thing on this site so the lifers here just have stuck with it. This site has gone through a lot of changes over the last 5 years. When I joined it was on vbulletin and on a kind of low level server with not that many resources. It wasn't uncommon for the site to have connectivity issues. They found that keeping threads to 10k or less helped with indexing/searching and helped keep the site more stable for all.

Fast forward years later. The site is on much better/more modern platforms and on a more robust server. I've never seen anything official from @Shaggy on it, but I can't imagine that the 10k limit is still really a necessity. Maybe he does want to keep locking them down early. But it really is just a legacy left over from the past.
