I thought they did a pretty decent job with The Thing prequel.

It is a "loose" take on a prequel... There were two humongous holes in the plot that bothered me... But if you get past it, it's a very enjoyable movie.

But yeah, it's a good movie... And you learn the origin of where the Aliens came from.
