After the massive deals of Mark Teixeira, Carlos Beltran, Alex Rodriguez and CC Sabathia come off the books over the next two years, maybe they will be big free agent players again.

They have a combined $110MM left on these four guys' "massive" deals. That is not keeping them from the FA market, I can assure you.

After further reflection, I think you are right. He may well command more than 30 mil a year if he opts out after 3.

Alternately, he may lose his arm in an offseason snow mobile accident.

I'm not saying that opting out will gain him more pay, just that without knowing the market conditions (including his performance), we don't know what he might get in three years.

I'm just happy Buckholz isn't our "ace" anymore.

Nope. Yankees are definitely trying to do things differently. And I applaud them for that.

We'll see.

If something they want is on the FA market, they'll go big. I think they're one of the best (if not the best) run organizations in baseball, and I would not count them out on anything or underestimate them.

This is fucking mind blowing:

George Steinbrenner bought the Yankees in 1973 for $10MM.

Last March, Forbes valued the Yankees at $3,200MM.

The team has no debt.

Those are crazy fucking numbers.

I think it's pretty clear that the Steinbrothers have decided they would rather put that money in their pockets instead of a ballplayers. I don't think winning is as important to them as it was to their Dad.

Undoubtedly, I just think they don't see the potential to contend next season so aren't going to spend the big bucks right now. Otherwise I would've expected them to try to sign both Grienke and Price.

Strasburg will be out there next year...he'll be in pinstripes.

Then Harper.

I don't agree with that. I think that with the shift to teams locking up young players into or through their primes, the economic landscape of baseball is changing and they're adjusting their strategy to those changes.

They won 87 games and made the playoffs in '15. Why would you assume they don't feel they have any potential to contend in '16?

My feeling about them passing on Price is because there's something about him they don't like. I think of Cano - there is no way the Yankees lost their best player to free agency because they were afraid to spend money. There was something about him they didn't like.

We'll see.

A lot of aging bodies on that roster.

Then Harper.

Given Strasburg's performance over the last three seasons, I don't think he's the attraction he once was. He'll be 28 as a free agent, so that's a plus, but he's going to need to step it up next year if he wants one of these mega deals.

Harper is under Nats control for another three seasons and will be 26 years old if he hits FA on schedule. If he continues this production, that kid will probably get a contract north of $450MM.

Barely behind Grienke in FIP the past 3 seasons.

Stras will get $25 mil from someone assuming he doesn't a) get disastrously hurt or b) completely fall off.
