I'll hold off my laughs of derision until I see the details. I heard there is a 3 year opt out, but is that a player option or a team option?

He can pitch in the regular season, he can't pitch in the post-season, and 7 years to these 30 year old pitchers boggles my mind. Kershaw makes sense to sign to 7 years at his age. But 30 years for Price and 31 for Max...and they get 7 year contracts? Goodness.

However, I 'm REALLY hating these contracts because of what it will mean to get Darvish back in Texas.

I don't have any problem with the money he's making yearly but the length of the contract doesn't make any sense. That contract will look bad by year 4

@fordman84 the opt out seems like a player option. He would be stupid to opt out though.

The five-time All-Star has an opt-out after three years with no deferred money. The yearly payout for Price is $30 million, $30 million, $30 million, $31 million, $32 million, $32 million and $32 million.

We'll see.

Either way, teams that play in the FA market are well aware that there's a very good chance that the long contracts won't be productive in the final years. It's the price you have to pay to land them, because if you don't, some other team will.

I do have to say though, it's funny as hell to see Yankees fans bitch about contracts. Cry me a river.

Opt outs are always player options.

As far as if he would be stupid to opt out, it's ridiculous to even try to sort that out as we don't know what the market conditions will be, or how he'll perform between then and now. There's a very good chance he could opt out and get more guaranteed money.

Who's bitching? I think most are in agreement that 7 year contracts for pitchers or hitters 30+ is a risk. It is the major reason why Yankees fan did not want Max last year unless it was a shorter deal like 4 years.

Which is fucking ridiculous. The Yankees are the team most capable of taking on that risk and absorbing the issue if it goes bad. Had they gotten Scherzer, maybe the would have won the division and who knows what would have happened then.

Agreed. Which is why if the team has the opt out/buy out, then it is a STELLAR deal. If it is a player option, probably not so much.

With this first mega-signing, prepare yourselves. The "we need a salary cap" comments and articles are coming.

I agree but I don't think they wanted another CC situation.

Teams don't get opt outs, they can get a couple team option years or so at the end of a guaranteed contract, but that usually only happens when teams are giving extensions to their young players.

Ok, wasn't sure if it was a true opt out or a buy out.

Yeah, I'm a nut about this shit. As dorky as it may sound, the business aspects of MLB is actually what drew me in as a fan.

Typically, the buyouts come when a player has a contract with team option years at the back end. Look at Hamels, for example, his contract is guaranteed through 2018, and then has a team option year (2019) for $20MM. If the Rangers decline that option, they have to pay him a $6MM buyout.

How fucking good does that Hamels deal look now for the Rangers?

I'm not saying that he thinks it was a home run, but I doubt he looks as it like a bed shitting.

They got four very good years from him, including a championship. Plus, from a business standpoint, there's all the other shit to consider - how much Sabathia swag did they sell, how did jumping out and nabbing a huge free agent impact the Yankees "brand."

The thing with the Yankees is money is a resource they can afford to "waste" more than any other team. I'm convinced they could easily support a payroll north of $350MM if they wanted to.
