Pond fishin' with live baits takes me back... If there's a horse barn anywhere in your vicinity, fork through their piles of poop and collect fat, white beetle grubs. They stay alive without a lot of fuss, and they're effective when dead. They will draw strikes from many varied species of fish.

When working a body of water (pond, lake, impound) for the first time, I'll start working the area with two types of lures - the crawfish with jig head in the fashion mentioned by @NEhomer (+this will reveal info about bottom & structure) and a spinnerbait, cast and retrieved in varied fashion. Both can be done with a basic spincast reel & rod.

There are also alot of hunting and fishing forums on the net. I am sure there is one out there that has people from your area posting to it. They are usually really helpful and will answer questions. I belong to a number of hunting forums that have people from California as members. They always provide advice to novice hunters.

Pretty much anything that swims will eat a worm. You can fish them under a bobber or on bottom. If i fish under a bobber I use a slip bobber so I can adjust how deep the bait sits. If fishing of bottom, I often use a marshmallow or small corky to float it off the bottom.

Use split shot with the bobber set up and egg sinkers on the bottom.

6lb test line works for most common fish.

I'm assuming since you're a fan of Pitt that you'll be fishing mostly in the Midwest?

A lot of fishing depends on where you're fishing and what you're fishing for. Most people do just your classic fishing -- IE, going after game fish like Bass, Pike, Walleye ect.

I'll do a little rundown of what I know and would suggest:

Rods/Reels:

You have two basic choices really for freshwater casting fishing. You have bait-cast reel/rods and spinner reel/rods.

Either will work for standard fishing and are really the most universal fishing rods/reels. There are some things to consider when shooting the type of reel you're going to get and the rod you're going to get. Spinning reels are a little easier to use and a bit harder to control accuracy. Bait-cast rods are a little harder to use but you can really get accurate touch with them with some practice. I like spinning reels because I just like not worrying about them binding up. The biggest problem with bait-cast is that when you cast, the spindle that the line sits on can go faster than the line going out and it can get in a big tangle.

The rod you choose depends a bit on what you're going for. They come in different lengths and weights. Light weight rods will be good for things like little pan fish because they're super sensitive. Heavy rods will be good for things like Musky. I tend to buy medium or medium light rods for bass fishing. I've caught all sorts of things on my medium rod -- little pan fish, bass, pike, walleye and so on. The length impacts sensitivity and casting distance. I tend to buy shorter rods because they're just easier to transport. I think my current one is 6'6'' medium weight. I buy two piece rods for transportation purposes. One piece rods will be more sensitive.

Fishing Line:

There are a bunch of different types of lines. There are 3 main ones, monofilament, Fluorocarbon and Super Lines. This comes down to personal preference. The superlines are really a new thing. They are made of super strong, super thin materials. The first two are the typical clear fishing line that you're probably used to. They're a bit thicker, and they stretch. I like the superlines because they are thinner, you can put a higher weight line on your reel and use up less room compared to the typical monofilament or fluorocarbon. I usually get 10lb test Spiderwire.

I'd also suggest learning 1 fishing knot as well as getting some swivels to tie at the end of your line so you're not constantly cutting line and re-tying lures on.

Lures:

This is where you're going to see a lot of people differing on what their favorite things are. This depends a lot on what you're fishing for and what kind of water you're in. For instance, the lake I fish primarily is around 15 feet at it's deepest, usually around 5 feet deep, so most of my lures in my bag are surface lures or crank at around 2'-3'. But I do go fishing up north in Michigan in a lake that gets as deep at 50' in some places and there's a steep drop off at shore. So I do have some worms with heavy hooks that drop quickly in the water.

I would suggest trying to get a little bit of everything so you're never in a situation where you're trying to fish a place with the wrong lure.

Where to start?

I would recommend these lures based on what has worked for me (but again, all fisherman are different in what they like to fish).

But like I said, you could really just buy them and try them out.

Spinners:

I would suggest getting a kit of Spinners just to have a few different kinds. Something like this Bass kit from Mepps: LINK

Spinners are great for all sorts of fish and you can catch anything on them from pan fish, to bass to pike. And they fish well in most waters.

Jigs:

Personally, I haven't had much success with jigs -- but some people swear by them. I have a few in my box and they're nice to have but I just tend to have success with other things.


Bobber/Hooks:


I have a couple of bobbers and a pack of hooks in my back to use if I ever want to catch pan fish to eat, but I so rarely do that, that I wouldn't recommend it. I tend to not fish with live bait (real worms and such). If you're catching for eating, wouldn't be bad to have them. Not rocket science here, just get a bobber, put on a hook of really any size and put a worm on it.

Colors:


This is where it can get confusing. I would stick to classic colors like white, black, brown. Yellow and bright colors also work well but I tend to have the most success with white/silver lures. Again, some of this is trial and error. I have a bunch of lures I never use because other lures just work better.
Tackle box:


I like to have one main tackle box and then I have a smaller one that I take when I'm doing like a quick fishing trip or wading out into water. Rather than getting a big plastic box, they have these tackle bags now where you can easily carry your stuff and rotate in the interior boxes that you want to take. Get a big one that holds 4-5 big tackle bins and a small bag that holds one or two tiny bins. Just my suggestion.


I also suggest getting a pair of fishing pliers and a fillet knife. If you do ever kill a fish on accident, it's nice to be able to fillet it and eat it so it doesn't go to waste -- assuming you were just planning to catch and release.

And that's about all I can think of. Again, a lot of it is trial and error, what and where you're going to fish and a bit of personal preference. If you're just beginning, you could probably go and spend $100 on a rod/reel combo, bag and a few lures and get going right away with very little trouble. Hope this helps some.
