No More "Bullpen Failure"
Texas assigned 12th-round RHP Paul Bonzagni to the rookie squad, the first 2023 pick to receive a roster spot.
If St Louis is willing to discuss Arenado, what about Goldschmidt?
Who would you call a significant upgradePlease do not give up value for Joe Kelly, Lance Lynn, Stroman or anyone that is not a significant upgrade.
Let’s see if Dana Brown or Chris Young is willing to go BIG in their first trade deadline opportunity or if they play conservatively…..Does either make moves and if so how BIG or does one or both stand pat?
Arenado or Goldschmidt, for starters. And despite his less-than-stellar ERA and bloated salary, Scherzer qualifies as well. I’d trust him 10 times out of 10 over Jon Gray in a pivotal playoff game. I’d also say Soto, Snell, and Hader.Who would you call a significant upgrade
When you are a reliever with an ERA of 5 you are getting hosed some of the time even if you strike out the side. There’s no margin for error in the playoffs. There are a while lot of people who want you to ignore ERA when strikeout rates are high. I had someone tell me that, more or less, on Twitter when I mentioned I didn't want Lynn. I told him when they started determining who wins by which team's pitching struck out the most batters, then i would ignore ERA.
Other than Scherzer what other startersArenado or Goldschmidt, for starters. And despite his less-than-stellar ERA and bloated salary, Scherzer qualifies as well. I’d trust him 10 times out of 10 over Jon Gray in a pivotal playoff game. I’d also say Soto, Snell, and Hader.
I’d just about put Bellinger in that category as well. He has been the best hitter in baseball since July 1, hitting almost .500 with tons of HR. He looks like the Bellinger that won MVP again. And I’d include Bednar as a significant upgrade, just because he’d be replacing some bum like King, Rodriguez, etc.
Keller from the Pirates and Civale from the Guardians would both upgrade the rotation. They’re better than Perez, Heaney, and Bradford and at the very least on par with Dunning and Gray.Other than Scherzer what other starters
And a reliever can appear in 40+ games usually an inning at a time and if he has a bad inning or 2 he will end up with a high ERAWhen you are a reliever with an ERA of 5 you are getting hosed some of the time even if you strike out the side. There’s no margin for error in the playoffs.
All good choicesKeller from the Pirates and Civale from the Guardians would both upgrade the rotation. They’re better than Perez, Heaney, and Bradford and at the very least on par with Dunning and Gray.
We’ve got several Hendricks types already on the team. Rather see us go after a quality #3 or better rather than another #5 starterI’d also echo Saddles’ suggestion of Hendricks. He’s a notch or two below the others, and he’s not a “major” upgrade. But while he’s perhaps the worst strikeout pitcher in baseball, he’s excellent at limiting damage to 2-3 runs and keeping his team in games.
If we landed one of the more premier arms I mentioned above and then Hendricks for the back of the rotation, we’d be in good shape and could afford to bolster the bullpen with Heaney or Bradford.
The guy in question, Joe Kelly has given up runsbinn7 of his last 17 outings amd it looks like he has averaged no more than 1 inning per outing. That is not good at all. Of course, he has also struck out 22, which would be very impressive, except for all of those runs he also allowed. And a reliever can appear in 40+ games usually an inning at a time and if he has a bad inning or 2 he will end up with a high ERA
If you went by ERA, Hendricks would be our third best starter, just ahead of Gray. Bradford is trending that way, himself. We’ve got several Hendricks types already on the team. Rather see us go after a quality #3 or better rather than another #5 starter
actually I’ve not in favor of Kelly either. I was actually talking about Alex Lange from Detroit. He’s appeared in 42 games, 41.2 innings, given up 26 hits and 18 earned runs and has 17 saves. The guy in question, Joe Kelly has given up runsbinn7 of his last 17 outings amd it looks like he has averaged no more than 1 inning per outing. I'm kinda surprised Juan Soto's name doesn't get mentioned more in trade talks.
His last 4 or 5 games have been better, but he went through a very rough stretch in the 14 appearances before that.actually I’ve not in favor of Kelly either. They’re saying the Rangers are looking to go a starter & reliever package so maybe Eduardo Rodriguez and Lange
Think he’s better than anything we’ve got outside of Burke, Smith & ChapmanHis last 4 or 5 games have been better, but he went through a very rough stretch in the 14 appearances before that.
He also has 4 more years of control left so he would be costly without having much of a track record. He would be a gamble, but he could pay off. You just never know about these relievers longterm.
You're reaching for some low hanging fruit there.Think he’s better than anything we’ve got outside of Burke, Smith & Chapman
