i hate to make a cowboys analogy here, but the following may apply.....when parcells took over the first season the cowboys played over there head and made the playoffs because he was a strict tactician and wasnt trying to make friends. this was the same when buck came in and took over for the rangers, they played over their heads and won 89 games. buck was also a strict tactician like parcells. eventually, both of these coaching styles wore thin and the rangers and cowboys regressed.

then the cowboys hired wade philips and they were a powerhouse. well, until the playoffs, but i digress.....wade was a players coach and the opposite coaching style played a large part in the difference of the 2 styles. eventually though the lack of discipline doomed the cowboys and they were awful. then the rangers hired wash, the ultimate players coach, like wade, and they have been unbelievable.

the cowboys then went back to the strict tactician style of coaching with garrett and they have been at least better.

and finally my point is maybe the rangers undisciplined play can be attributed to the lack of discipline they face. and perhaps, this team needs a strict discipline oriented manager to get their heads screwed back on. sorry for the novel, just something to think about.

Any time you start a baseball post with "I hate to make a Cowboys analogy", you probably shouldn't. Not even remotely similar.

The effectiveness of disciplinarian vs. player-friendly managerial approaches accounts for the high turnover in coaches around professional sports. Few coaches are able to achieve a perfect balance of the two. Disciplinarian coaches work best for teams with a bunch of young players or teams who are very desperate to win a title at all costs. This year's Orioles and the 99 Dallas Stars under Ken Hitchcock are perfect examples of this. Those teams were/are more willing to withstand the micromanaging, hard practices, and tough discipline in order to a achieve a title or at least a return to winning ways. However, in almost all of those cases, the coach's brow-beating eventually wears on the players and they begin to tune out the coach. The losses start to pile up, players revolt, and the coach gets fired. A player-friendly coach is more suited usually to a veteran team already stocked with leaders who prefer not to have someone criticizing or coaching their every move. Player-friendly coaches usually work well at first too, as the players are more relaxed and have a sense of trust from their coach. But often times, after a while the atmosphere gets a little too lax and the inmates start running the asylum. You see a lot more mistakes being made on the field/court/rink, and a change at head coach is needed to whip the guys into shape. Supposedly this was one of the reasons why Dave Tippett was fired as head coach of the Stars. Despite his success record, the clubhouse had become too country club with not enough discipline directed at the veterans.

Hopefully Wash can maintain a balance of discipline and being laid-back and keep the team focused yet also relaxed and having fun. Not an easy thing to do.

then dont read it, nobody is twisting your arm. also, dont criticize something you dont take the time to read. it's just an analogy that is applicable to all sports, not just football

The Rangers offense is still for the most part M.I.A. and Tim Lincecum has given up 4 or more runs in 8 straight starts. One of those trends has to come to an end today. Hopefully it's the former.

Problem is Lincecum has actually been pretty good at home.

Damn, great chance to put a couple runs on the board there early

If that were us there's no way we would've gotten out of that unscathed. Napoli didn't show much discipline at all there.

Ogando needs to quit pitching like a relief pitcher going for the strikeout.

Ogando had a no-no going too. Of course it was very early, but he was dealing.

The 3-0 lead is nice, but the Ogando injury is troubling, as is the Rangers already leaving the bases loaded twice through 4 innings. Hopefully Ogando was lifted just as a precaution like you said.
