Is Mazara really a "prospect" any more? Maybe not a seasoned veteran but hardly a Brinson or even a Gallo at this point.

I actually think they do because according to all reports out there, JD was willing to trade Profar and Gallo to get Sale, but talks broke down when the White Sox demanded Mazara.

Of course those reports could all be inaccurate as they often are. I guess we might find out here soon enough just how JD feels about our prospects and which ones rank as untouchable.
Yeah, I wouldn't trust anyone to know exactly what was offered and what was turned down. Even if it was something like that we don't know if any of those three could have been left out and a deal be struck. I mean whose to say it was Mazara himself in it or having all three in it that killed the deal.

My point was simply that I don't think the organization changed the way they felt about Gallo, Profar, Brinson or Mazara based on their first few at bats in the big leagues. I don't think they require anyone to put in a few dozen at bats in the big leagues to serve as any kind of proof of what they are going to be. I think they felt a certain way about Mazara, Gallo and Brinson before the season and they probably still feel the same way. Profar is a completely different story based on his injury though.

To some he is proven and to others he is still a prospect. To me he is a highly regarded prospect who was needed before the others and thus got regular at bats that the rest of them never got in their first 50 games or more. I think he will have a very good career, but I feel the same way about Gallo, Brinson and Profar as well.

No reaction to Profar being in LF tonight?

I don't much care for it, but I get what they are trying to do and think it easier to stomach than Napoli was out there. I am not sure the 1-2 spots in the lineup is where I would bat Pro and Maz at the moment but hope they mash tonight

Rangers "all over" Velasquez
Update: 5:40 p.m. ET

The Rangers continue to do their homework on Phillies right-hander Vincent Velasquez, according to Ken Rosenthal. While Rosenthal notes that a deal is unlikely -- the Rangers are said to be investigating numerous cost-controlled starters -- it does present us with a fun question: should the Phillies consider trading Velasquez? You can make a case -- perhaps not a convincing one -- based on the ideas that the Phillies are a year or two away from contention, that Velasquez's value will never be higher, and that his past injury issues make him a attrition risk. Of course, that's probably not convincing enough, but maybe the Rangers will put together a package so good that the Phillies have to think about it before saying no.

Santana unlikely to be dealt?
Update: 4:51 p.m. ET

The Twins would have to be overwhelmed to trade veteran righty Ervin Santana, reports Jon Heyman of Today's Knuckleball. Minnesota does figure to trade relievers such as Fernando Abad and Brandon Kintzler, however. Santana has a 3.78 ERA (112 ERA+) in 114 1/3 innings this season, and he's owed a reasonable $27 million from 2017-18 with a $14 million club option for 2019. The price of pitching is so high right now that the Twins figure to get some tempting offers.

The problem as I see it is everyone wants Profar Gallo and/or Mazara. Can't blame them but which are expendable? Seems to me we are wanting more the we need. Three aces is nice but #3/4 will protect our future and not break the bank. Darvish,Hamels,Volquez or Moore, Lewis,
Holland Griffin

That has been the problem since Profar has been in trade talks for years. The issue is that Gm's tell everyone "for this guy I want your #1, #2, and #3". Difference is that our 1,2,3 are all #1's on more than half the teams. Getting LAA's 1/2/3 doesn't add upto even Profar.

Now that's just stupid. If anyone were willing to give up a top 10 prospect then the twins would trip over themselves to pick it up.

That wreaks of a "hey guys, don't forget we are here too and have pitching" plant story.

So back to the business at hand. Trade or no trade I see this stretch of 14 games ( 4 vs KC, 3 @ Balt, 3 @ Hous, 2 @ Col, 2 vs Col) as pretty significant. Need to break even IMO or at worst go 6-8. KC is no slouch, Baltimore is best home team in baseball I believe, Houston has best record in baseball since June 1, and Rockies are better than their record suggests. Tough tough stretch. Good start last night.

6-8 with at least 2-1 vs HOU will not be too bad.

One thing of note is that for the past month the Astros have had a very easy schedule. It gets tougher tonight tho. They still have to go to Cleveland for 4, play the Cubs 3 games, and 2 series with the hated blue Jays. I know we have some tough series coming up too, but you can say that it has evened out or maybe the Astros have the tougher schedule now going forward.
