Was hoping we might pick up a game on the Astros but Framber Valdez just threw a no-hitter against Cleveland

MLB trade deadline winners and losers: Mets give up on the dream, get fleeced by Astros

Listed as winners here. National media seems to think we did good.
We did. Our trade season haul was Max Scherzer, Aroldis Chapman, Jordan Montgomery, a so-so reliever, and a spare catcher.

If anyone had said back in May that CY could bring all of that in and only give up one top-10 prospect, most here would have jumped at that chance. None of the guys we gave up have elite superstar ceilings, so we’re unlikely to ever deeply regret these moves.

Saw J.P. Martinez had 2 singles and a HR and stole 2nd twice and 3rd twice.

Chris Stratton’s FIP is 3.05 which is very good and indicates he has pitched better than his 4.36 ERA indicates. For comparison Reynaldo Lopez who the Angels just got had a FIP of 4.56 for the White Sox.

You bring up some interesting topics.

How many of our guys without elite superstar status should we trade?

Who do we have that fits into that category? Any? Should we trade the rest since we are unlikely to regret trading them?

How should we judge a trade? Should we wait to see how everyone pans out and use hindsight? Or, should we put a value on who is involved based on the various factors and determine if the value received is worth the value given up?

Prospects value is always based in potential. That value is there without knowing if that potential is going to result in a good MLB player or not. The value therefore is only about potential. That's why to me, trades involving prospects should be judged at the time of the trade, and not years down the line.

There is so much involved in discussing something like this. The supply and demand factor is a huge factor. There are lots of others too. That's why folks can have such different opinions because there is no formula to use that we can input the factors into to come up with the answer.

Well Rick Hahn was not grilled for giving away Tatis.
Judgment often harsh comes latter as all of this is not a science

To me looking at a kids physical makeup is definitely a factor but I am not privy to the inner workings that might make a Pedroia or in our case maybe a Bradford Shinto me is an over achiever

Pitching did it job last night against an inspiring ChiSox lineup minus Robert. Bochy was not going to let Heandog face him a 3rd time even with pitch count We saw 3 of our winning pieces shut down the rest. Very interested to see Stratton who is likely a guy to pitch late innings.
Encouraged to see Scherzer interact with team. Looks like he fits in and like a little bulldog Seems like the Maddux connection is working

Yes the bats were quiet but I think Biochy lightly scolded them for being swing happy and amped vs composed. Definitely not not.

Still a win is a wins and this was a good one Might get some momentum if we beat Cease

And BTW evidently Preller saw something elite in Tatis or was he a bit lucky. I am not sure.
And yes Gallo had high elite expectations too
Strange game baseball

My biggest gripe was not resigning Matt Moore. That I don't understand.

$7.55M is what he got am guessing he wanted more, am guessing a lot of teams thought last year was a fluke and he was signed very late...

Lopez has not given up a run in his last 10 appearances. Before that he had a bad 4 game stretch. Before that he gave up 1 unearned run in 12 appearances.

When they change the rules to where baseball is played without fielders, then I will start judging a pitcher by Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP).

I don’t agree with this reasoning, simply because a really good pitcher might be pitching for a team with awful fielding.

Now if he’s staying on that team, then I guess you can ignore his FIP. But if you’re judging him on what his value is to all teams on average, then FIP gives you a much better idea of how he might perform on a much better fielding team.

It’s not that baseball is not played without fielders. It’s that baseball IS played with very, very different fielders from team to team, and a pitcher’s ERA will change based on which set of fielders he has behind him.

Put a bunch of 5 yr olds in the field behind Justin Verlander and he becomes a pitcher with an ERA over 10. But that’s nowhere near indicative of the pitcher he actually is.
