So make the Max move because he agreed to his player option for next year but if the thought process is what you stated and I don’t disagree that there are too many needs possibly then you really don’t need to make the move for Montgomery who’s a rental. Use the trade deadline and FA after the season to build for 2024 and beyond. Just seems like teetering on the fence. Use TK and Thomas as pieces to get you something for beyond this year.

I can’t explain why but I think they’re re going to use the rest of this season to work on Montgomery about staying with the team thru 2024 and beyond. That would give us Scherzer, Eovaldi, Montgomery, Dunning & Gray as starters in 2024. That way we can concentrate on the bullpen

Go after him in the offseason when he won't cost you prospect capital. Spend money and prospects wisely. What if he doesn't sign like you hope.....?

He's got nasty stuff and there's good reason to think he'd thrive in a role like that.

He can alternate with Burke as a guy capable of pitching multiple innings/set things up for Smith/Chapman.

Unless......and I am just playing Devil's advocate here, the bullpen schedule of pitching 3 days a week or just an inning or two here and there, a couple times per week, doesn't jive with him being used to taking the ball for 5-6 innings every 5th day. Sounds like an easy transition but it isn't always

Of course it's not a guarantee that he'd fit mentally, but unlike some of the other options, his actual stuff seems like a good fit for that role.
