Could we sign Keuchel or James shields?

Would rather have either of those 2 over smyly.

Only if they would take $50 a game for the rest of the year. That's about all the Rangers could afford

I'd rather them give some young guys a shot than put a bandaid on with those

That would be fine too. Just do something.

I don’t think smyly is going to pan out. He looks just as awful as Shelby Miller.

Obviously true but guess some guys are not yet ready. Injury bug and perhaps a little more polishing needed. Would love to see some guys called up

For sure don't want to go buy a few more old hats

This is the way I would explain it: You can’t be a big-league pitcher if you only have conviction in one pitch,” Woodward says. “So as much conviction as you may have in your fastball, and you say, ‘That’s my best pitch; I have to live and die by that.’ You’re gonna die by that. Because you can’t — unless you have an elite pitch that nobody can hit, and there’s maybe three or four of those guys in the history of the game — you have to learn how to have conviction in that breaking ball. And that comes with off-the-field practice and dedication to it. And our guys have done a really good job of that. Either in their bullpens or their flat ground… getting off the mound, working on shaping that curveball for a strike, it helps a lot.”

Such is the nature of guys coming back from arm injuries, 2 years worth in the case of Smyly

I looked it up, got him for basically nothing it seems
Yeah, we basically got him for allowing SF to unload Austin Jackson on us. Below is the write-up Scott Lucas did just after the transaction.

Texas acquired OF Austin Jackson, RHP Cory Gearrin and RHP Jason Bahr from the Giants for cash or a player to be named later. Jackson was batting a disappointing .242/.309/.295 in limited play (36 starts plus a healthy number of substitutions and pinch hits). He'd signed a two-year, $6 million deal over the winter. Gearrin isn't a household name but has been around a while, logging 219 relief innings between the Braves and Giants over the last seven seasons. He's making an arbitration-eligible $1.675 million. Per local reports, the Rangers have told Jackson not to report, as he'll possibly be traded again. The Rangers owe the pair just over $5 million, pending whatever they might recoup in another trade. In addition to the salary purge, the Giants created some breathing room under the luxury tax threshold.

So, while Gearrin may hang around, Bahr is the focus, both for me and the Rangers. MLB.com had Bahr ranked 27th among San Francisco's top 30 prospects. Baseball America didn't rank Bahr in its preseason 30 but listed him seventh among right-handed starters. He was also BA's #156 draft prospect in June 2017, and the Giants selected him in the 5th round.

Bahr had recently earned a promotion to high-A after 13 starts with Augusta in the Sally League (he never faced Hickory). Combined, he's posted a 2.55 ERA with good peripherals: 8 HR in 84.2 IP, 7% walk rate, 30% strikeout rate. Per Baseball America and other sources, he throws a low-90s fastball that has touched 96, a slider, curve and change. BA didn't think much of his secondaries as a draft prospect, but I gather he's shown improvement. In another BA article from last week subtitled "Biggest Leap Forward," GM Bobby Evans described Bahr as "a guy we've taken note of." Although already 23 and older than every active Down East pitcher save for Sal Mendez, Bahr doesn't have much mileage on his arm. He spent three virtually unused years at Central Florid
a before getting a chance with a new coaching staff and becoming his team's top reliever. He'll report to Kinston.

To date, Bahr has an ERA of 1.90 and a WHIP of 1.096. He is a little older than some at his level, but like Scott said, he doesn't have much mileage on his arm. He has only thrown 266 innings between college and the minors combined.

This has nothing to do with much, but our story-board needs a makeover. Four guys featured, two of which are retired, and one is in the other league - has been for awhile too......Just been bugging me a little

Woody is starting to protect him from striking out several times a game. They’re trying to prolong his life at the major league level as long as possible.

Big stink isn’t in the lineup tonight.

I’m shocked.
