Most Washington fans kind of gave the Giants a pass, way behind the Cowboys and Eagles on the hate meter. But all that changed when Mara orchestrated the $36 million cap penalty (huge at the time) for contracts previously approved by the league and the union in an uncapped year that were reworked in Shanahan's first season here. They called an hour before free agency was to start with no warning in an uncessary twist of the knife.

I will never get over that and have enjoyed seeing the Giants suck ever since. It is deserved.

I still dislike the Gnats least in the NFCE personally but I will never forgive or forget MARA for that ISH that year. Complete crybaby BS move by Mara.

I think if you could get him for a 3rd/ conditional 2nd and the Raiders pay his salary, it would be a good fit for the Cowboys for half a year to see what happens. Dallas will only be as good as Daks arm can take them this year. Run game ain't much so have Lamb one way and Adams the other would be tough to defend. Both guys would get plenty of targets so no problem there, imo. Definitely wouldn't do it if he insisted on a contract extension though.

Having said that, can definitely see Rodgers pushing the Jets into it or being re-united with Carr in New Orleans which I could see kinda being a detriment to both teams, tbh. Neither team is even close to contending for a championship, imo.
I see the Raiders wanting arms & legs ensech for the trade. But I could be wrong.

Both the Cowboys and the Redskins deserved their penalties. It was a no cap year, not a no rules year. The NFL sent memos to all teams telling them what they could and couldn't do. Specifically that signing bonuses teams signed players to were NOT to be classified as roster bonuses, (so that the cap applied all in the no cap year rather than over the length of the contract - up to 5 years). Both teams willfully ignored those instructions. The Redskins signed Haynesworth and Hall whilst the Cowboys re-signed Austin. All 3 players were signed to large contracts that maximised year 1 hits in the no cap season to avoid cap hits in the following 4 years. The NFL penalties were less than the extra cap room the teams gained, which is why Mr. Mara was still upset and Mr. Jones was smiling like a Cheshire cat when he said the Cowboys would accept the penalty. Multiple teams could have been charged with cap rules violations in that year, (notably the Bengals and Buccaneers for spending less than they were supposed to), but only 2 teams broke the rules egregiously.

Here's some context to the penalty, not written by me but another redskin fan from back in the day

I forgot which year exactly, but the previous CBA was a couple of years from expiring. The owners decided to opt out of the final year of the CBA (as a negotiating tactic, iirc) which resulted in what would be an uncapped year. This meant that there was technically no salary cap that year, but the owners all supposedly made a gentleman's agreement to have a "cap" Which would be the same as the previous years. THIS IS VERY ILLEGAL AND KNOWN AS COLLUSION. IANAL, but it has to do with the NFLs anti trust status I believe.

Anyway; many teams disregarded the agreement that year, the buccaneers went WAAAAAY below the cap floor to the point where they rolled over something like 50 mil in cap space to the next year, the raiders went a little over the cap, the Cowboys went over the cap, I think there were also another 2 teams I can't remember. Finally we get to the Redskins. At this point in time the massive contracts we had given to Dhall and fat fuck Albert were showing to be massive mistakes and so Bruce Allen thinks: well, shit, I've got an uncapped year, I'm going to front load the hell out of these contracts into this year!" DHall and Albert get a fat paycheck upfront and the skins unload more or less $32 million dollars in future cap space. The Redskins submit their cap numbers to the league, who accepted them and life went on.

Now fast forward like 2 or 3 years and the skins announce that they will be trading a shit load of picks for the second over all pick...but wait! Here comes the NFL spear headed by John Mara with a massive $32million cap penalty to the redskins, $10 million for the Cowboys and more to come! Well now the NFLPA is losing its shit because the reasoning behind our penalty was that the Redskins took an unfair advantage by breaking the "cap" that the owners had agreed on ..with out negotiating with the players. That's right, John Mara straight up admitted to breaking federal law. The NFLPA fresh off of getting their asses handed to them in the most recent CBA seemed to be looking for a fight, but instead the NFL was able to bribe the NFLPA, by spreading out our penalty money amongst the league as a one year cap increase (each team received an extra $2 million dollars, except the raiders, who didn't receive a penalty either.

So we have multiple teams who obviously broken this unspoken rule, but only the Cowboys and the Redskins get the hammer while other teams received no punishment? Oh what's that? the two teams happen to be in the same division as Maras Giants, who also said that if he had more of a say (he was the chair of the investigating committee) we would have also lost draft picks as well?

The whole thing stunk for a bunch of reasons, but especially with maras obvious bias

Disclaimer: this is all from memory so might not be %100 on point, but I'm sure it's damn close

oh yeah, to add salt to the wound, NFL dropped this news the night of Free Agency. we had just acquired RG3 and obviously planned to surround him with additional players.

As one league source explained it, the Redskins remain extremely upset about the situation, strongly believing they did nothing wrong. In our view, they’re right. Each and every player contract that supposedly violated the “spirit of the salary cap” was approved by the league in 2010 and complied with the rules that were on the books.

Of course, the contracts were approved because failure to do so would have flagged for the NFLPA the fact that collusion was occurring.

That continues to be the bottom line. The teams were colluding in the uncapped year, and the Cowboys and Redskins were punished for refusing to go along with the plan. The league wisely kept the situation under wraps until the ink was dry on the new labor deal, which prevented the players from suing for collusion

yep, pretty much depends on which side you agree with. I'll remain mad, lol
Why be mad? The Redskins 'stole' a $40M cap advantage and their penalty was to give $36M of it back. Not the NFL's fault that the Redskins hired a HC who would alienate the key players on the team.

It's pretty much water under the bridge at this point but remains UNFORGOTTEN by me. it is what it is. I think I laid out the reasons pretty clearly above from a Skins fan perspective. Skins had a legit case but dropped it to hide the dirty laundry of the League

AFC Offensive Player of the Month

Josh Allen
Buffalo Bills · QB
Allen has been a one-man wrecking crew for the Bills, dominating by land and air. He's racked up nine total touchdowns, including seven passing scores without an interception. All told, Allen has completed 70 of 101 passes (69.3%) for 814 yards, while also rushing for 106 yards and a pair of TDs. Buffalo is in first place in the AFC East, and Allen has most certainly led it there.

NFC Offensive Player of the Month

Sam Darnold
Minnesota Vikings · QB
Darnold has found a career renaissance in the North Star State. He's been a guiding light for the undefeated Vikings (4-0), throwing for an NFL-high 11 touchdowns. He's completed 73 of 106 passes (68.9%) for 932 yards, authoring a surprising start for Minnesota and a feel-good story for himself through four weeks.

AFC Defensive Player of the Month

Kyle Van Noy
Baltimore Ravens · MLB
The veteran linebacker has been in prime form through September for the Ravens. Van Noy has piled up eight tackles, seven tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a pass breakup. Most eye-popping, though, is that Van Noy is leading the AFC with six sacks. He's tallied two apiece in Baltimore's victories over the past two games.

Boswell's been a staple in the Steelers' 3-1 start, putting up 39 points in four games. Six of those points came on a perfect 6-of-6 on point-after touchdowns and the rest came on 11 field goals in 12 attempts. Boswell has been dialing in from long distance, as well, converting five of six attempts from 50 yards and beyond.

NFC Special Teams Player of the Month

Brandon Aubrey
Dallas Cowboys · K
The long leg of the west has been a marvel in September, turning 50-plus field goals into child's play. In all, Aubrey racked up 43 points in the month, making good on all seven of his extra points and 12 of his 13 field goal attempts. Of his field goals, Aubrey is 6 of 7 from 50 yards or longer, with mind-spinning makes of 60 and 65(!) yards to his credit.

Offensive Rookie of the Month

Jayden Daniels
Washington Commanders · QB
Astoundingly accurate through the air and hugely successful on the ground, Daniels has taken the league by storm in his first month. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Daniels' 82.1% completion percentage leads the league and his four rushing touchdowns are tied for fourth. Daniels has led the Commanders to first place in the NFC East, completing 87 of 106 passes for 897 yards, three touchdowns and just one interception in four games. He's also rushed for 218 yards.

Defensive Rookie of the Month

A 2nd rounder is a little steep but not outrageous, imo. I think they are asking high just to see if someone will bite. I doubt they get any takers without sweetening the pot a little. They would maybe need to foot the bill for his remaining salary this year. The big issue is his restructure or asking price moving forward. Of course, the Jets might fork up whatever if Rodgers tells them to. I mean, what the hell, right. They are all likely to be fired in January anyway.
