Make him a coach. In fact, offer him the DC position when Phillips leaves which will be after this season.
I don't know about this move it wasn't the defense that blew the SB game last season. I hope they can get someone good to coach the defense.
Yeah I saw that today. I hope they get someone on McVay's page to replace Wade. Someone with new ideas on defense. The Rams have been bad on stopping teams on 3rd and long for too many years.Part of the problem, Rams defense gave up far too many 3rd and longs and 4th downs.
The top candidates for Phillips' replacement include: Joe Barry, Rams' LB coach who worked with McVay in Washington and is also the assistant HC (apparently the pundits can't get their stories straight about his status with the Rams); Aubrey Pleasant, the Rams CB coach; Kris Richards, Caboys' DB's coach; Rod Marinelli, Caboys' DC; and Burt Bielema, Patriots DL coach.
McVay wants more input on the D side of the ball so he is going to hire somebody who will be open to his direction. I think this is a recipe for disaster. McVay is going the wrong direction by trying to be involved in everything practically. HE can't run his own offense effectively, how does he think taking on the defense going to improve the D. MEanwhile the pundits are suggesting McVay should hire Jay Gruden who McVay worked with in Washington and was obviously fired in favor of Ron Rivera.
The successful HC's are those who delegate. Kyle Shanahan is a good example as his assistant coaches are now being raided for HC positions throughout the league.
I like the Bielema selection because of being trained by Belicheat. Mike Vrabel who played and coached with Belicheat is a good example of successful coaches able to beat his former mentor from the Belicheat tree of coaches. He would be the best bet but may not be open to being overlooked by McVay.
McVay better be careful or his approach is going to backfire and we will be watching from the sidelines again next year. Sometimes guys like these get real bigheaded and end-up looking like a complete idiot in the long-run. Mike Tomlin comes to mind.
Stay tuned as we shall see how this plays out.
From what I've read, McVay wants the ability to scheme up for specific matchups like the Patriots did to the Rams in the Super Bowl, instead of just relying on old school technique.
BTW, Vrabel never coached for the Patriots.
I think Mcvay needs to worry about the offense and figure out how to scheme and 46, and 6-1, defenses...until he can effectively game plan and make needed changes in game leave the damn defense alone and hire a DC. Ever heard of the old saying: "sweep around your own front door, before you try and sweep around mines."
