At least Garcon doesn't fear catching the ball or catching it over the middle. I don't care if he is viewed as a 1 or 2 or 3. He catches footballs that hit his hands, he understands McVay's offense, and he makes plays. Isn't that what Britt, Quick, and the turd, Austin are paid to do?

Rams need to replenish depth in their secondary

From now until the start of free agency on March 7, we'll take a position-by-position look at the Los Angeles Rams in eight installments. The Rams -- coming off a 4-12 season that prompted the hiring of rookie head coach Sean McVay -- have about $40 million in cap space but do not have a first-round draft pick. They also have a lot of needs, all of which can feel a little overwhelming without breaking it down by section. We'll do that here. Next up: the secondary. (Previous: WR/TE, DL, OL, LB, RB, QB)

Key returnees: CB E.J. Gaines, CB Lamarcus Joyner, S Maurice Alexander, S Cody Davis, CB Troy Hill, CB Mike Jordan, CB Blake Countess

Notable free agents: CB Trumaine Johnson, S T.J. McDonald

Top free agents available (for now): S Eric Berry, CB Stephon Gilmore, CB A.J. Bouye, S Tony Jefferson, S Barry Church, S Logan Ryan, CB Morris Claiborne

Key stat: The Rams had a 1.7 percent interception rate in 2016, the seventh-lowest mark in the NFL and their worst since 2009. Johnson had 13 interceptions from 2013 to '15, tied for fourth in the NFL, and a career-high seven in 2015. But he intercepted only one pass in 2016.

Janoris Jenkins and free safety Rodney McLeod and replaced both internally. This offseason, their new primary cornerback, Johnson, and their stalwart strong safety, McDonald, are headed for unrestricted free agency. There's a chance -- though perhaps a slim one -- that either one will be franchised. But the likely scenario is that the Rams try to bring them back at fair market value, or if they can't then simply move on.

Joyner, only 5-foot-8 but pound-for-pound one of the game's toughest players, emerged as a solid slot corner in 2016. But Gaines, a promising rookie in 2014 who then missed all of 2015 with a serious foot injury, was graded 107th out of 112 qualified cornerbacks by Pro Football Focus. And the Rams didn't have much beyond that. Hill, Jordan and Countess, either undrafted or pushed aside by other teams, were next in line at cornerback. And Davis, primarily a special-teams contributor, was pressed into action when Alexander missed time at free safety.

Just as with the offensive line and the receiving corps, the Rams need to address their secondary this spring. They need to do it through free agency, a realm they haven't been very active in since Les Snead became general manager in 2012. And they need to do it through the draft, where they haven't taken a defensive back since 2014.

I never understood this, outside of the money factor, but if your own FAs are damn good, why go looking for someone else who has not played with the present roster? I really think they should franchise Johnson and give McDonald a raise unless both are dead set on sticking around.

The problem with that, you're talking most of our cap room for those two, then what do we do to get better?TJ will be looking for a BIG raise and franchising Truman is 16+ mil....

Yea I get the money thing. They'll probably re-sign McDonald and let Johnson walk along with Britt, Quick, and several other Fisherites.

Think so? I'd try to sign Trumaine and probably let McDonald go... Johnson is really our only good CB and I'd think it would be tougher to replace him than McDonald... Phillips seems to like good CB's which is another reason I'd think we keep him.. But of course, you never know...

May be LTRF. They could sign Johnson and then move Mark Barron back to his natural position letting McDonald go. That would work capwise since Barron is already under contract. This conundrum is anybody's guess and we will find out in the next couple of months.

Rams DC Wade Phillips sees more flexibility, deception in 3-4 defense

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Wade Phillips played in a 4-3 defensive scheme in college, as a linebacker at Houston in the 1960s. But he went on to become a defensive coordinator who would specialize in implementing the 3-4 scheme, one he will transition the Los Angeles Rams to in 2017.

He just thinks it's a better defense.

"When you have a 4-3, you have four linemen, those are the four guys that are rushing," Phillips said. "When you have a 3-4, you have three linemen and somebody else is coming from somewhere because it’s going to be a four-man rush most of the time. It gives an advantage of them not knowing, protection-wise. I think it helps you, pass defense-wise. If you look at our pass defenses over the years, you look at our sacks over the years, they’ve all been top of the league. And I think that’s the key to beating people is stopping the passing game in this league. That’s why I’ve stuck with the 3-4."

isn't expected to change much for the Rams' players, even though they used four down linemen and mostly five defensive backs under former coordinator Gregg Williams, a master at disguising pass rushes.

Aaron Donald will remain a three-technique, and though veteran defensive end Robert Quinn may no longer operate out of a three-point stance, he's still expected to spend most of his time getting around the edge to pressure the quarterback. New defensive line coach Bill Johnson, most recently with the Saints, was with the Falcons when Phillips converted their defense from a 4-3 to a 3-4 in 2002. He remembers there being a lot of angst about the transition, but the Falcons went from 26th to 12th in defensive DVOA in Phillips' first season.

The 3-4 defense will only provide "more multiplicity," Johnson believes.

"Really and truly, to me, it’s techniques," Johnson said. "They [the four down linemen from the 4-3 scheme] are going to be playing the very same techniques. And I sort of had the same thing in Atlanta -- this is a four-man front, how are we going to fit these players?

"I learned that you can be more multiple and you can attack protections better. I learned a lot of football with Wade that first time. And I think the advantage is we’ll be able to take our players and match them up in different positions that give us even better matchups."
