CHARLOTTE -- It’s tough to be a defensive back these days. Cornerback Chris Culliver made a bang-bang play that could have given the Washington Redskins a seven-point lead. Instead, the officials ruled it was unnecessary roughness, giving Carolina the ball at the 13-yard line. Perhaps, by the letter of the law, it was a penalty. But that doesn’t mean the rule is always a good one.

But let’s also start with this: The game was still tied. The Redskins could have held the Panthers to a field goal. They had only one turnover at this point. Yet the game unraveled.

There were other penalties, too, such as the holding call on tight end Jordan Reed that nullified a first down at the Panthers’ 3-yard line. Tough penalty, no doubt.

The problem, though, was not the penalties. When you lose 44-16, turn the ball over five times and miss too many tackles, there’s one place to direct the blame: at yourself. There’s a difference between being upset about calls and using them as a reason for a loss. The Redskins toggled around that line Sunday.

Blaming the officials might feel good for a moment. But the harder thing is to look at the real reasons behind the loss -- because some of them keep happening on the road.

Consider referee Jerome Boger's crew. As the chart shows, it entered Week 10 leading the NFL by calling an average of 20.8 penalties -- accepted, declined and offsetting -- per game. It also had made a league-high 21 calls for what I call "behavior penalties." (Personal fouls, taunting, unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct.) That's more than three times as many as the crew with the lowest total of such calls.

So it wasn't surprising to see Boger make a letter-of-the-law call Sunday against Washington Redskins cornerback Chris Culliver, whose right forearm made contact with the neck area of Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen during a game-changing play in the second quarter at Bank of America Stadium. The contact was not severe, but Boger enforced a 2015 update to Rule 12, Section 2, Article 7(b-1) that prohibits players from "forcibly hitting" a defenseless player's head or neck area with the "helmet, facemask, forearm or shoulder" during the process of an interception.

The unnecessary roughness penalty wiped out Culliver's 75-yard interception return in a game that was tied at 14. The Panthers finished the possession with a touchdown en route to a 44-16 victory. Boger's crew finished the game with 24 total penalty calls against a pair of teams that entered Week 11 with two of the NFL's seven-lowest penalty totals.

ON the bright side, we wont get the Booger crew again next week. Down side, we will likely get Hochulie and HIS crew who also seems to never have a good call to make if it can go against the Redskins. Seriously time for this team to get to the point where they play well enough t hat the calls dont matter.

Amen to that. If the Panthers beat them by say 7 I could see the beef. However - when they lose in the manner that they did these type of complaints are hollow & sound like the chant of a sore loser. Time to focus only on the things that they can control.

The next game it tricky to predict since it is at home where they do well but against a Giants team that generally gives them fits. This team would do wonders in fixing their reputation if they could at least beat the Giants & the road game vs. the Bears in several weeks. They are not going to impress many people by only winning at home against relatively crappy teams.

Luckily for the Redskins, they play in a horrible division. Even with this loss, they pretty much can control their destiny with a win over the New York Giants Sunday. A win would put them in the drivers seat of the NFC East with a 5-6 record. Four of the team’s final six games are against NFC East teams. Therefore, the panic-mode that should ensue from this Panthers’ beat-down probably won’t emerge. But it’s building up, for sure.

The most alarming part about this loss to the Panthers is the Redskins were pretty much deflated early in the game. Judging by several player’s social media accounts, they saved all their anger for after the game. Here’s the thing, bogus penalty-calls should make a team that more heated. Instead, it dumped a bucket of ice-cold water on Washington’s miniature flame.

I was kinda stunned at the scores as I saw them flash across the screen...I expected CAR to win a much closer game, but you're right...the REFs didn't have THAT much impact on a game you lose by dame near 30.

As the sample size gets a little larger...the team has been more consistent with Gruden/Cousins. Asumming he's doesn't just fall on his face over the next 6 games, I'm guessing it's pretty much a lock that Cousins gets a 2nd contract?

The NFL can never allow coaches to challenge penalties on judgement calls like that. Now what i would love to see is Refs get fined for obvious bad calls. Say each team can submit up to three per game for review and if its found to be a bad call, dock their pay. But I doubt that would happen either because it would make Refs a bit more timid with the flag. And we all have seen the rules are being tailored to take defense out of the game.

Certainly not blaming the bad call for the outcome of yesterday's game. However - the primary ref for that game was part of yet another embarrassing situation that should lead to his dismissal from the NFL very soon. His name is Jerome Boger & he is an embarrassment to all refs. For laughs Google "Jerome Boger sucks". Enjoy.
