Excerpt

The key to consistency remains elusive. For the fourth time this season, the team followed up an impressive victory with a demoralizing loss. Sunday represented Washington’s sixth multiple-turnover game, and by no coincidence, the Redskins suffered their sixth loss of the season. A week after everything worked right for Washington, all of the usual problem areas returned. The offense couldn’t run the ball, and the defense couldn’t stop the run. The team committed too many penalties and couldn’t force any game-changing plays.

And so, the peaks-and-valleys theme of the Redskins’ season continued. The reason for Sunday’s loss was no mystery.

Excerpt

CHARLOTTE — The Washington Redskins’ latest road flop began, naturally, with a thud. On the opening kickoff, Dustin Hopkins slipped during his approach and went sliding as the football dribbled toward Panthers fullback Mike Tolbert at the Carolina 30-yard line. And that was actually the most innocuous mishap of the afternoon.

It turned out to be merely a curtain raiser for a Sunday full of follies, an omen for another futile road performance. It seemed like there were banana peels all over Bank of America Stadium, and Hopkins encountered the smallest one. At least his misstep didn’t wind up costing Washington any points. However, the rest of the team’s blunders contributed to a dismal 44-16 loss to the undefeated Panthers (10-0).

In their worst performance of the season — seems like we’ve said that after every road game, doesn’t it? — the Redskins committed five turnovers, four of them fumbles. They’re 0-5 on the road in 2015, and 1-12 during Coach Jay Gruden’s tenure. Four of this season’s road losses have come by double figures, and overall, Gruden’s teams have lost 8 of 13 road games by at least 10 points.

[Redskins again struggle on the road in loss to Carolina, 44-16]

Even though it’s understandable that a young team amid renovation would produce uneven home and road splits, Washington can’t be taken seriously as an ascending franchise until it stops embarrassing itself with such consistency away from FedEx Field.

The Washington Post's Keith McMillan and Scott Allen discuss the Redskins' Week 11 loss to the Panthers. (Thomas Johnson and Randolph Smith/The Washington Post)
It’s one thing to lose convincingly to Carolina, the current king of the NFC. The Panthers are just better. It’s another thing to be complicit in the Panthers’ success..

You can't have less than 15 yards rushing
You can't have 5 TOs
You can't have a center who can't remember the snap count - multiple times
You can't give up 5 TD passes

I can go on and on. I said this in the game thread. No sense in blaming any one person or thing. Team wide failure.

Give Carolina credit for a good game plan. They blitzed more than anyone I remember or at least more effectively. They blitzed a bunch on first down. They blitzed on third in long which we were in way too often. The corner blitz to start the 2nd half was brilliant in my opinion. The blitz didn't get picked up, Cousins didn't recognize a corner blitz they got the ball back and effectively finished the game at that point. Our line can not block for 7 step drops. It worked well, I would expect to see it again.

Perfect summary Sportster. Turnovers and a terrible defensive performance was the problem. Carolina could have hung up 70 if Rivers hadn't called off the dogs. We all questioned the Barry hire and I get it, we don't really understamd the game like the coaches. But I swear id I see our corners playing 7 yards off on another 3rd and 3 I'm kicking in my tv. I was all set to trash Culliver but if it's true that he is being misused that's on Barry.

Oh yeah, no issue with the call on Culliver. It's the rule now.

For all those who say a game doesn't hinge on a single call...very few calls are 14 point swings.

And the ones that are generally end up in the team that got screwed on the call losing the game. I was at the game, and the Refs seemed to be watching the game with one hand already on the flag when ever we were on defense. Not making excuses really. But seriously on the Culliver play, the flag was already on the ground before the ball even got jarred loose. As if the ref were primed to throw a flag for illegal something no matter what.

Well DGF Elly Mae is coming to town this weekend. We all remember the last game we played the Giants. It was basically a practice game for him. If I am correct the last time we played the Giants they had some injuries to their OL an the Skins Def front four simply could not produce a pass rush. JB def scheme simply has to much of vanilla flavor. If I was the DC I would blitz more especially when you have an young OL or an OL that has injuries. I understand this is a big risk especially if you secondary is not up for the challenge. How about blitzing a little more. Phillips was my choice as a the DC. However we have JB and we must remember JB is a disciple of Rod Marinelli who has pretty much of a non blitzing scheme (Tampa 2 scheme)

I have mention this before and that is we should expect more from Kerrigan and Hatcher on a more consistent bases. This could be coaching also and a lack of talent. We simply don't have the talent to run JB Def/Tampa 2 scheme. Send the front four and drop seven soft coverage scheme. You need a good front four like Tampa did. So what is wrong with changing it up a little bit to cover up for your lack of talent. Hey other teams blitz KC from time to time even when they have other deficiencies like injuries or lack of talent.

IN thinking on it, the best way the NFL could fix issues like the most blatant bend over and take it call is to NOT call incidental Helmet to Helmet flags. We have replay. Its pretty simple to look at a play and determine if the offensive player lowered his head into the contact. Hell I thought the Marion Barber rule was supposed to cover stuff like this because an offensive player who lowers his head to use the helmet as a weapon is supposed to get flagged according to the latest set of rules. Short of stepping aside and escorting Olsen into the endzone, or waiting for him to take three steps and then trying to tackle him around the space between the bottom of his shirt and the top of his pants..... There is no other way Culliver could have defended that play.
