Anybody that watched the game should be able to tell you...the game was a game until the refs blew it big. Some teams are too immature to recover from that kind of a call.

Pretty much think we all realize that the rule is the rule. The penalty follows the letter of the rule. Would have been nice to include intent but you gotta defer to the ref on this. Don't have to like it tho.

My question is...was he defenseless. He had the ball and had squared up for a split second.

This is my feeling also. He wasn't defenseless and this type of play was not intended to fall under this rule. This rule was to protect thos receivers that have laid themselves wide open attempting to catch the ball and vulnerable to a hit from which they couldn't protect themselves.

The NFL can never allow coaches to challenge penalties on judgement calls like that. Now what i would love to see is Refs get fined for obvious bad calls. Say each team can submit up to three per game for review and if its found to be a bad call, dock their pay. But I doubt that would happen either because it would make Refs a bit more timid with the flag. And we all have seen the rules are being tailored to take defense out of the game.

Fined? The clown that runs that crew needs to be fired - ASAP. He has an extensive track record of horrible calls & has been called out numerous times over the past several years. What more is the NFL looking for until they take action against someone who is obviously incompetent?

Agreed. But once again this wont happen. The NFL is taking the stance that they would rather live with a few really bad calls, then deal with another player safety law case. And the NFL isnt going to start reprimanding or firing REF because the true end goal is to build the excitement and drama. It sells tickets the more teams they have still in the hunt come weeks 12-17. Why do you think the biggest story out there right now is the 3-7 Cowboys still having a shot at the division??

Well - another case where the NFL is at a crossroads. Up until a few years ago they could act cocky and do as they please. However - perhaps only to a lesser degree - the tide is turning & increasingly fans are becoming fed up w/ Goodell, officiating, the cockiness & lack of morals for a lot of owners, etc, etc

Sure - things are great now, but that doesn't mean that they will always be this way. The NFL better be careful and stop assuming that they can always do whatever they please.

BTW - how exactly do they build excitement and drama when most games now consist of non-stop ref conferences, play stopages, zillions of commercials and constant reviews that often result in the wrong decisions being made?

As long as 75% of the teams still have a SHOT at making the playoffs come week 13, the NFL has gotten what they wanted. The fact that you can only really count out 6 teams right now is what the league has wanted for years. Any other year, with Dallas at 3-7 the Stadium would likely be only half full for this Thursdays game. Because they apparently have a shot, expect a full house.

This is what the NFL wants. And it does build the excitement they were hoping for. A month from now no one will be complaining about who got screwed, the talk will be.. can this team win the division or secure a wild card spot.

Perhaps but when more and more of the focus is on officiating and when you basically don't let defenders play football you are going to start building resentment among fans. A lot of these owners have become too fat and happy & are getting carried away. They can still have most teams in the hunt while cleaning up what has become a mess on the officiating side. There are plenty ways to resolve all of this & honestly I see nothing wrong with removing dead weight from the officiating ranks - perhaps you do it during the offseason when nobody is paying attn.
