Prayers and condolences to the families of the fallen and injured. Let's hope they can bring this guy down without any further injury or death.

The line between fantasy and reality for a lot of people is shrinking. People can sit on their magic box and create whatever paradigm for themselves they want to make themselves feel better. And eventually, their fantasy world inside the magic box stops being enough. Some fantasize they are the protectors of justice and truth. Other fantasize that they are God incarnate, bringing their vengeance down for everything they see wrong. The world inside this magic box is no different than the world outside it, and fewer and fewer people seem to get that. And a lot of people's grip on reality is slipping. Whether it be this guy, or a college student in California who never got laid or two preteen girls who tried to kill a classmate to appease an imaginary photoshop monster.

Maybe we should consider getting these people help.

This is definitely true.

Honestly, I never thought I'd really think this, but media really does play a huge roll in what we are seeing. I was always in the boat that movies and video games don't do anything. But truthfully I think we are desensitizing kids at way too early of an age and some just kind of go off the deep end at some point in early adulthood and do shit like this.

Overall, even with news broadcasting nothing but awful events and filth, we are just becoming an overly desensitized species to atrocities like this. I mean it sounds awful, and I am truly sorry to hear about these deaths, but it doesn't phase me anymore. It's just another day on Earth now.

I'm not really sure if I'm getting to any specific point, and I am most certainly not in favor of censorship... But I don't know where to place the blame. A bulk of it has to go on parenting right now, as there are way too many kids being exposed to bloodshed and gore at an early age. During their formative years they shouldn't be exposed to that, it just drains their innocence and posions reality for them.

But it's not the creators of these movies and games' faults, it is the people who enable children.

I don't know. /rant over

This could get into a very deep discussion...

The way I see it, it's a downward spiral. People get desensitized to violence, and think they can act out without consequence. Then the media reports 24 hours a day on isolated incidents of bad and ignore the good and people who are already unbalanced believe that they are constantly in danger, when statistics show that the world is considerably safer than it was even back in the 1970's. People perceive that this is "everywhere" and "happening all the time" so they live life afraid, and makes them more likely to fall into deeper darkness. And the Internet just makes it so people can customize their consumption to fit their already determined world view. And get advice on how to deal with it all from people who are just as fucked up as they are.

Look at now. We're talking about these isolated incidents. But the fact of the matter is, there are tens of thousands of college campuses around the country that *didn't* have a virgin rage and get shot up. There are literally billions of people who went to bed last nigh and *didn't* get murdered in their sleep. As terrible as this is, every other neighbhourhood in Canada and the US is not dealing with a crazed gunman on the loose. Stay focused on what this is. A terrible, isolated tragedy.

"Terrible thing to live in fear. Brooks Hatlan knew it. Knew it all too well."

This is a horrible day.

It would probably be best to debate issues like this when a little more time has passed. I'm with 43, hopefully no one else dies today.

I went to bed hoping it'd be over when I woke up...I'm sort of shocked that it isn't.

One of the fallen officers was a father of three. I know that's not uncommon in these instances, but it puts things in perspective.

That's what hits me the hardest. My dad and my uncle both went to work every day and I wasn't sure I'd ever see them again when they did.

They both died old, retired men. I can't even imagine what those kids are going through right now.

Or maybe I just don't want to.

According to CBC News Network. Police have surrounded a building. They know which building but won't say

According to tweet. There are 100 people near that building excepting a standoff between Mr. Bourque and the RCMP

I don't want to think that this is right, but:

This guy is giving a sort of play by play (which he probably shouldn't, although it seems they've surrounded him), and it sounds like he was in a residence of some sort. Of course if a man with a gun broke into my house, I'm probably not going to force him out the door...

There's a scanner up online...apparently he's at his cousin's house, and that's the building they have surrounded. They received and anonymous tip.

Sounds like he wasn't in the building they have surrounded?

Anyone else find it a bit odd how many people are standing near the scene?
