I start a thread on this topic because I want to know who you guys think needs to go elsewhere for the betterment of the Giants.I myself would like to see Shierholtz,Huff and Burriss traded or released so we can get a look at Kieschnick and Noonan.

Huff has no value. We would need to package him with Nate just to clear $$.

Burr offers enough that I think we could actually get SOMETHING in return (20 yo, B- prospect type).

Riot just needs to be played the right way, and he will be fine.

As is, though, I do not see any needs/excesses that need to be addressed yet. Wait until mid July.

Tough to say. Obviously, a lot of people would love to trade players like Huff and Zito (even with his SSS resurgence this season), but I don't think anybody would take them due to their contracts. Burriss has to have close to zero value to anybody who watches baseball. It wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit though if he were DFA and we never saw him again in a Giants uniform.

Of the players that the Giants have that actually have (some) value that I also wouldn't mind trading are (for the right pieces coming back):

Schierholtz, Pill, and a bullpen arm not named (Romo, Casilla, Lopez).

I am pretty sure that if the Giants were to DFA Burriss, we would not see him in ANY Major League uniform again.

As for your other suggestions, I just don't think Schierholtz is going to bring back anything remotely close to what the Giants get out of him, so trading Nate would be a mistake. The guy needs a regular set of ABs and he will be just fine as a 4th OF.

Pill likewise. He's a 1B who hits for decent, but not great, power and he's not exactly a kid. A 27-year-old journeyman 1B with an OPS below .800 who cannot hit LHP to save his life is not going to bring back any player of real value.

If SF wants to move these guys to free up time/roster space for younger players with more potential, I will not argue. But believing that any of these guys has trade value beyond Triple-A roster filler is something I cannot comprehend.

*by the way, you got rep for the bolded part.

In fairness, I did put the qualifier "some" before value. I also never said that Pill or Schierholtz would be the primary attraction/bait in the trade, just useful pieces that a team without a large payroll may want to take a flyer on......maybe catch "lightning in a bottle".

They should send Pill back to Fresno. I had fun watching him and Belt knock the crap out of the Rivercats when they came up to Sacramento.

Pill has value as a bench player. He is a dead-red first ball fastball hitter, which has value late in games when relievers come in throwing only 2 pitches and are trying to get ahead in the count. He has little trade value tough, I'd rather keep him around. Nate too is a very fine 4th OF.

Huff has no value what so ever and could be released by August. There is no one to replace Zeets in the rotation so he's out of the question.

Honestly a guy who has the most value is someone like Belt. If we want to fetch an established guy at 1st/3rd, bye bye Belt.

Other than our obvious stars, I really don't see us having anything on the ML roster to trade for any real talent. Any trades we do make are probably going to be made with mid-ling prospects - think Keppinger deal.

What's the equivalent to Sosa? Surkamp?

That's a bash on Kamp!

Sosa was DFA'd twice in his stint with us. Why the Astros wanted him is beyond me, cause they could have had him for free a couple of times.

Surkamp is still a huge ? with that elbow, so I doubt he has any value right now. And his number make Sosa look like a bum, so I think he would fecth more in a trade.

Surkamp >>>>> Sosa

But Kamp is still hurt and has not pitched yet. Once he pitches again, he immediately becomes our #6 and/or increases his trade value to something more than Sosa (think Pucetas, but probably more than him as well).

I would guess that Noonan, Peggy, Adrianza, Kiesch, Culby, ToJo would be the main chips flashed around to other teams...

We may not have players with trade value, but we do have that mid-level exemption, don't we? We should have picked up Adam Dunn on the cheap. After last season, the Pale Hose would have paid to rid themselves of his contract.

For what they were traded for, I think not going after Lowrie, Scutaro, and Quentin was kind of sad. Two play an obvious position of need, and are not automatic outs with the bat, with the latter being better than anything we've thrown in RF (aside from a short Tron rental) for about a decade.

That's what I figured, but I didn't know if there was a guy in the Giants' system right now that closely resembled a player that was as past his prime (which still wasn't good enough for the bigs) as Sosa. Also, as a fan, I always overvalue the players in San Francisco's minor league affiliates because there are very few minor leaguers that I follow outside of the Giants' organization. With that in mind, when discussing prospects, I always suggest someone on the high end of what it would take to get a fill-in-the-blank-type player (in this case, Keppinger, who is almost as much of a statue as The Riot, by the way). Thanks for the insight. Obviously, everything will be a little clearer in July.

Sosa throws 96 from the right side, Surkamp pitches 88 from the leftside. The closest equivalent to Sosa right now is probably Crick (of the guys I know), but Crick is already better.
