It was the right thing to do. I think the Pirates should've given a chance to McPherson or Locke. I prefer McPherson because I think he's a better pitcher but Locke has been waiting for it longer.

In either case - it's not so much that I expect either player to be a better long-term option than Correia but I remember the boost that Duke and Maholm gave us one year and that we've gotten from a few other players in recent memory. I think we could take advantage of the fact that there's no book on either pitcher and squeeze a few wins out of either of them.

I think I'd go with Locke right now because he's more refined and is a lefty. I know it shouldn't matter that he's a lefty, but I think having two lefties and three righties in the rotation makes it just a little more difficult to work out lineups for the opposing team.

Compared to Correia, Bedard's suckyness has somehow flown under the radar. He had some tough luck losses at the beginning, but outside of that he has been very consistently terrible. I am very happy he is gone. I would also rather see Locke, but Correia is still an upgrade.

I get the impression that you guys are a lot more optimistic about Locke than I am. I think he'll be lucky if he has a career as long and as successful as Correia's.

From what I've seen of him, his control is a great deal better than Correia's, and I think that's what gives him such a huge edge.

First: Thank God Bedard is gone. He was 7 - 14 on the season & quite frankly I could'nt stand watching him any longer.

Second: I would much rather see McPherson or Locke ( Or Both ) get a shot in this rotation over Kevin Correia. If JMac struggles again tonight & gets shelled, I am for bringing the both of them up.

Third: I would have rather had Brock Holt called up over Chase D'Arnaud. That's just me.

Brock Holt is a beast.

When you see how inconsistent and rather unreliable Correia has been, how is there any more danger in using an "unproven" guy? They gotta give 'em a start or two.

over the last 30 days, the starters ERA's are rather staggering.
in order of ERA:
1. Karstens
2. Wandy
3. McD
4. Correia
5. Burnett
6. Bedard

based on this and other intangibles, my ranking of our SP
1. Karstens
2. McD
3. Burnett
4. Wandy
5. Locke
6. Mcpherson
87. Correia

we really don't need correia to start another game.
we have 32 left and 2 off days.
possibly
Karstens = 7
McD = 7
AJ = 7
Wandy = 7
Locke/Mcpherson = 4 if the off days work out right - didnt have time to map them out (at most 6 with likely of 5)

we could also pitch karstens and McD on 3 days rest at the end if the wins are essential and the rookies are over their head with that pressure.

4-5 games split between the 2 or add wilson or game by committee if we have 40 players and the starters are going deeper into games and resting the pen.

we really dont need to see correia again. need to audition starters for next year, correia isnt cutting it this year and need a better 5th option, and correia has shown he doesnt like or cant throw out of the pen.

cut him with bedard so we can have someone else on the playoff roster if we get there.

alright,
just mapped out the schedule.
pitching our main 4 four days rest everytime and using the 2 off days strategically, the #5 starter has 5 starts and is scheduled to go the last day for #6.
we could throw McD on 3 days rest. that is the only time someone would pitch on less that 4 days rest.
we could skip the #5's fifth start and give all the big 4 their last start on 3 days rest and mcD would do that twice and Wandy would do it twice.

so 5 starts between Locke, McP, and game by committee with all the extra arms (wilson, locke, mcp, vanderhuk, reyes, slaten, wood, etc + our regular BP people)

release correia NOW before sep 1. we will never use him in oct. it is a wasted roster spot if we keep him on and we get to the playoffs.
