How long will I love Bryce Harper?

(Now if we could get that shit re-shot in the Bank, instead of the shitty, demolished Shea Stadium)

On the flip side, that deal also could have included opt outs where he could (probably would) have gotten a pay increase.
Possibly.

The market also didn't produce the 10/400 that so many were talking about when he turned that offer down. I doubt the offer was still available after the other deals the nationals made.

He has to generate 40 total WAR over the 13 years to make this contract worth it, no matter what he does in the last three years. If he generates 40 WAR in 10 years, you can release him and the contract would still have been worth it.

And the Phils aren't done yet.

I was actually shocked to see he's only finished in the top 30 of NL MVP voting three times, and those finishes were first, 12th and 30th.

If you told me he's only once finished in the top 10 of MVP voting I wouldn't have believed you.

If he didn't get hurt in 2017, he might've won the MVP since he was the frontrunner at the time he got injured in August, but missing 40+ games killed his shot.

From FanGraphs :
Since Jackie Robinson joined the majors in 1947, only 13 players have put up a WAR within five of Harper’s 30.7 and within 20% of his 3957 plate appearances through their age-25 seasons, including Manny Machado. The 11 players who preceded this year’s free agent pair averaged 39 WAR from age 26 through age-35, and eight of the 11 players are in the Hall of Fame. Even ignoring Harper’s MVP season, his comps create an incredibly high floor. According to my colleague Dan Szymborski, ZiPS, which uses some fairly conservative playing time estimates due to the length of the deal, still has Harper worth more than 30 wins over the life of the contract even with the last few seasons projected to be below replacement-level.

Over such a long period of time, 40 WAR is likely an overestimation, assuming inflation. Still big

@Chewbaccer

if acuna can hit 3 more hr's and knock in 25 more rbi's a year...the braves will have to break the bank to keep him

:pound:

I'll worry about contract time when the time comes. If he plays at an MVP level while he's here, that's about all we can ask. I sure as hell don't trust this ownership group to pony up and keep him, and guys like Chipper would take a hometown discount are rare.

13 years with no opt out. He'll be 40 when this contract ends.

He wasn't bad at all last season, but I definitely expected better in a contract year. I just wonder if he's gonna have any motivation at all now that he's set for the rest of his career.

I won't lie, this move does make me pretty nervous, and as pissed as I was we we brought back Markakis and pretty well took us out of the Harper sweepstakes, I wouldn't have wanted him for that many years at that price.
